Hill County Democrats heard Tuesday from the candidates in the only contested Hill County Democratic primary this year — the race for Hill County treasurer and assessor.
During the Democratic fundraiser in Havre Tuesday, incumbent Sandy Brown and former treasurer Carrie Dickson both made their cases as to why voters should mark their names in Tuesday’s primary.
Brown said she has been working in the office 15 years, and in her first term as treasurer she has made some changes to the office, but has more she wants to do.
“We have been implementing new ideas, new things, we have brought our technology up to where we should, but we have a long way to go,” she said. “There are a lot of things I still want to do.
“Hopefully the taxpayers themselves … have noticed the difference there,” Brown added. “But I just want to say … I would appreciate going back because I have more to do.”
Dickson, who worked in the office for 21 years including 16 years as treasurer before Brown defeated her in the Democratic primary four years ago, said her history and experience in the office make her the best candidate. Her audits were good, she said, tax delinquencies in her tenure were low, and she was the most prolific treasurer in the history of the office for high returns on county investments.
She said issues she wants to deal with include bringing in more technology and ensuring security issues are in place to keep the county’s high bond rating.
“I enjoyed being the treasurer, and I hope you will give me the opportunity to serve you again,” Dickson said.
