North Star girls rule the Northern C

The North Star girls track and field team has been a Northern C power for years. And so it was to no one’s surprise that the Knights dominated the 2014 Northern C Divisional track meet last week.

Last Thursday in Great Falls, the Knights scored 89 points to claim yet another Northern C title for head coach Brian Campbell. And overall, the District 9C was dominant as the Chinook girls finished in third place with 62 points, while plenty of area athletes found the podium and a trip to the Class C state track meet later this week.

North Star was in control of the meet at Great Falls’ Memorial Stadium from start to finish. Tylynn Rettig won both the 100 meters and 200 meters. She finished the 100 in 13.0 and the 200 in 27.8. Rettig was a big point-getter for the Knights as she also finished third in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump, while also competed on the Knights’ relay teams.

Meanwhile, Bettie Carlon added more fire to North Star’s power. Carlon won the long jump with a leap of 16-02 and the triple jump with a leap of 35-04. She also finished second in the 100 and third in the high jump and was also on the North Star relay teams. Delainey Spicher was also one of many Knights to place, including two top finishes in the hurdles.

Chinook was aided by a strong showing in the throws. Britney Nelson captured the shot put with a toss of 36-01, while Makhayla Farmer was fourth. Nelson also finished second in the discus with Farmer third and Tavin Schneider fourth. Farmer added a fourth-place finish in the javelin as well, while Kailey Kleinjan placed fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200 and Emily Dennis took second in the triple jump.

Also on the girls side, Big Sandy senior Molly Herron finished second in the 800 and third in the 400, while Turner’s Ella Billmayer placed fourth in both the 1,600 and 3,200, while Chester/J-I’s Allix Goldhahn placed in both hurdle events, the longjump and the triple jump.

The race for teams points on the boys side didn’t go as well for area schools Thursday. Thanks to an outstanding performance in the distance races, Box Elder was the highest area finisher with 31 points.

The Bears got wins from Will Ketchum in the 1,600 (4:53.9) and the 3,200 (10.29.2). Ketchum also finished fourth in the 400 and fifth in the 800, while teammates Shane Ketchum and Brandon The Boy also placed in the 1,600 and 3,200.

The majority of Chinook’s points came from senior Zach Molyneaux, who won the shot put with a throw of 50-06. Molyneaux took second in the discus and sixth in the javelin, while Travis Roth finished third in the 800.

C/J-I’s top finish was from Cody Ramberg, who placed second in the high jump, while Justin and Steven May also placed in events for the Hawks. For the 9C champion North Star Knights, Quinn Spinler placed second in the pole vault and sixth in the high hurdles, while Cooper Spicher and Matthew Helmbrecht also had top-six finishes.

All of the athletes and relay teams who places in the top five at the Northern C Divisional move on to the Class C state track meet Friday-Saturday, also in Great Falls.
