Laurel — Independence Bank and BNSF Railway launched the first Hi-Line Economic Summit Wednesday. Lots of talk and interesting ideas flowed from the many speakers and panelists who were on hand. The job now is to be certain that the ideas are followed up on.
Dart — Rep. Mike Miller, R-Helmville, says he’s challenging Montana law that limits corporate contributions to political campaigns. He says such laws limit political free speech. Miller said corporate contributions and dark money are part of the constitutional guarantee of free speech. He is saying that rich people have a lot more free speech than poor people, The Montana commissioner on political practices contends that Miller violated the laws and suggests that Miller be removed from office. We’re old-fashioned and believe only the voters should remove someone from office. But Miller’s contention that using dark money and secret contributions is fine and dandy doesn’t set well with us. He’s represented in his lawsuit by James Brown, the same attorney who has represented the reprehensible Western Tradition Partnership in the past. The company one keeps ... .
Laurel — Todd Klassy arrived in Montana from Back East not too long ago, but he has fit right into the Treasure State scene. He has gained a reputation as a fine photographer who specializes in the beauty of the Hi-Line. He has taken fantastic art, be it from the plains, the Bear Paws or the reservations. He has been honored by Secretary of State Linda McCulloch, and his work will be on display in the “Treasured Montana Artist” portion of her office. This will give Montanans from all parts of the state a chance to see the beauty of our area.
Laurel — For years, as the director of RSVP in Hill County, Alison Hecker helped people find volunteer work. Now, she’s taking on an important volunteer responsibility. She’s been named to the H. Earl Clark Memorial Museum Board. The board is always short on money but long on enthusiasm. She will be a valuable addition to the board.
