The Royal Knights of track

Some athletic programs find a groove of success and settle in for the long haul. That is where the North Star girls track team has operated, as the Knights have consistently dominated the District 9C year-in and year-out for the last eight seasons.

Wednesday at the District 9C track meet in Havre, the Knights won their eighth consecutive 9C title. The Havre Middle School track has been a place of great success for the Knights, while the rest of the district continues to fight for second place. North Star took the title with an impressive 209 points, while the Chinook Sugarbeeters finished in second with 182. The Big Sandy Pioneers were third with 74, followed by the Turner Tornadoes with 40 and the Box Elder Bears with four.

With dominating numbers, the Knights were able to dominate the meet from start to finish. It helps when the Knights can sweep entire events like the pole vault with first-, second-, third- and fourth-place finishers, helping make this win just as exciting as the rest.

"Absolutely it is," North Star head coach Brian Campbell said. "I think there is consistency in the fact that the girls have proven they will do whatever it takes to win the track meet. The first, the eighth, the third, the fourth, they are all the same because we use the same philosophy. We had our senior thrower (Whitney Wendland) clear two heights in the pole vault today after picking it up 10 days ago, so I think people know what we are trying to do. We are going to put as many girls as we can in each event and try and score as many points as we can."

But all the first- and second-place points really boosted the Knights. Both Bettie Carlon and Tylynn Rettig won three events each. Rettig won the 100 (13.10), 200 (27.50), and pole vault (9-8). Carlon won the high jump (4-10), long jump 16-1), and triple jump (34-5). Delainey Spicher won the 100 hurdles (17.50) and the 300 hurdles (51.20), while Graysen Spicher won the javelin (111-6) and the 4x100 won with a time of 53.70. Carlon also took second in the 100 (13.30) and Rettig took second in the long jump (15-0.25). Helping put the team over the top, Kristyn Lavery took second in the 1600 (6:19.50), Sarah Massar took second in the 100 hurdles (18.40) and Sierra Yanny took second in the pole vault (7-0).

The Beeters needed a little more help in the chase for first place, but still got some great finishes.

The 4x400 relay team took first (5:00.7), while Britney Nelson helped Chinook dominate the throws with two titles. Nelson won the shot put (34-1) and the discus (94-8). Makhayla Farmer took second in the shot put (32-1) and javelin (107-6), while Tavin Schneider took second in the discus (94-8). On the track, Kailey Kleinjan took second in the 200 (27.84), while Katelyn Neibauer took second in the 400 (1:08.50) and Talya Johnson took second in the 300 hurdles (54.80). The short relay team placed second (55.70), while Emily Dennis came through in the jumps. Dennis took second in the high jump (4-6) and triple jump (32-8).

"Chinook, by far, has the best throwers in the state." Campbell said. "But they have a lot of good athletes, so to come out on top of them is big."

Big Sandy was sparked by Molly Herron and Maddy Reichelt. Herron won the 400 (1:05.90) and the 800 (2:37.10), while Reichelt took second in the 3200 (13:46.20). The long relay team took second (5:05.10) for the Pioneers.

Ella Billmayer paced the Tornadoes. Billmayer took second in the 800 (2:40.90), but also took first in the 1600 (6:07.50) and the 3200 (13:06.50).

The top five individuals from each event advance to the Northern C divisional track meet in Great Falls next Thursday.
