Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Ryne Antley, Havre Track and Field

Havre's Antley a jack of all trades

Blue Pony senior Ryne Antley is off to a strong start in track and field

Sports have consumed the life of Havre High senior Ryne Antley since he was about four years old, and over the years, he has participated in several different sports and activities.

Currently, Antley is the defending Central A divisional champion in the javelin, and he has gotten off to a great start in the event to start his senior season. Over the years, Antley has also played baseball, football, basketball, wrestled, and most recently, became a Havre High Stuntman for the Blue Pony cheer team. He also has played baseball for nearly 14 years now and will play what might be his final season with the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team.

Antley handles the majority of the catching duties for the North Stars. Baseball has been his passion over the years, but Antley also played two years of basketball for the Ponies and wrestled in middle school. Along with his vast array of experiences, he has taken part in his share of league bowling with his father.

The 2014 track season is just a couple of weeks in, and Antley has already shown he is capable of reclaiming his divisional title, as well as being competitive at the state meet.

He has been a thrower for the last four years and has made the state meet as a sophomore and junior. The season is still young, but Antley is coming off of his best throw of the year, winning the Havre Lions Invite with a toss of 154-4. He also turns in the occasional place in the discus and shot put, but should make the most noise again this season in the javelin.

Once Antley is finished at Havre High, college is the next step.

The University of Montana and Montana State University-Northern are both still options. And it may play a role in his decision, but Antley also was already accepted to the UM cheer program as a stuntman, and UGF has contacted him because of his history with the cheer team at HHS.

Whatever choice Antley makes, he knows he will go into a major that involves math, most likely a major in business or accounting.

Ryne Antley sat down and answered five questions with the Havre Daily News.

HDN: Compared to a stereotypical thrower, you could be considered undersized, but how do you manage to stay competitive and put up just as impressive distances and marks?

Antley: “For the most part, it is my technique. Like in the javelin, I am always focused on how the javelin is coming off of my hand, I have to make sure it is coming off on the top, at the right angle. Technique is all I have over those bigger guys, power is always nice, but if you don’t have it, you have to perfect your technique if you want to compete.”

HDN: How did you get involved with being a Havre High Stuntman?

Antley: “I started out just helping the mascot out when he couldn’t be at games. I was the mascot just part time, but the cheer coach was having trouble keeping numbers, so I decided to help out where I could. From there it just turned into becoming a stuntman. It was pretty fun. You get some hazing for it, but you just have to look past that and say ‘You do what you want, and I will do what I want.’” I enjoyed it.”

HDN: How have you been able to jump out to a hot start in the javelin this year?

Antley: “I just kept a mindset of wanting to beat the school record. That is my main goal, and I said ‘This is the year, this is my last year and I am going to do something with it.’ The record is 166-5 and my best is 160-0. I just want to be remembered for being smaller but being able to throw well. Baseball sure helped me keep my arm strength up, but working out in the offseason has really helped me since I have put on nearly 20 pounds over the summer.”

HDN: What is the best part about being involved in different, but competitive sports?

Antley: “I don’t want to look back and wish I tried different things. I can look back and say I tried, this, or I tried that. If I don’t like something new I try, I have to finish it out, but if it isn’t something I am passionate about, or something I can’t put 100 percent into, I don’t do it.”

HDN: Is there a hobby, or even activity that you want to get involved with once your prep athletic career comes to an end?

Antley: “School and math. I have a passion for math, and it is something that I just love to do. It is also heavy in my major, so math will be my new hobby.”
