George Washington St. Pierre, 82, passed away at his residence in Rocky Boy, Mont., on Monday, March 31, 2014.
Wake services will begin at 5 p.m. on Monday March 31, 2014, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Rocky Boy. His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Rocky Boy, and burial will be at St. Pierre Ridge. George was born Feb. 22, 1932, in Rocky Boy, on a snowy day when lightning struck, thus his Chippewa Cree name "Thunder Hawk." He was the eighth child of Roger and Mary (Pepin) St. Pierre. He was raised in Rocky Boy where he attended the Old Sangrey and Old Agency schools. He was a graduate of Salinas High School in Salinas, Calif. George was a very proud, reserved and independent man. He enlisted in the Army on April 19, 1951. He served as the training officer of the Korean conflict. He received training as a civil engineer while in the service. George was honorably discharged on Aug. 23, 1956. In 1959 George married Rose LeDeau, and together they had three children, Laurie, Tracy and Greg. The couple later divorced.
George was an employee of the Bureau of Indian Affairs as a supervisory civil engineering technician on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation for approximately 23 years. He continued to work part time until 2006. George was a vital instrument in the surveying and construction of many of the roads we drive on today ... Crow, Rocky Boy, Fort Belknap, Highway 87, and the Dakota' – "Roads of Montana."
After retirement, George enjoyed reading, fishing and his daily routine of picking up his mail, his newspaper and making sure all his bills were paid on time.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Mary St. Pierre; his sisters, Elizabeth Duran, Josephine Fernando and Maxine Stone; and his brothers, Harry, Albert and Joseph St. Pierre.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Rose; and his daughter, Tracy St. Pierre of Ogden, Utah; his daughter, Laurie St. Pierre of Havre, Mont .; his son, Greg St. Pierre of Rocky Boy; his only living sister, Mary Rose St. Pierre of Capitola, Calif .; numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
George will be greatly missed by all his friends from far and near.
