Winter, spring or fall, HHS's Ohm can run
All prep careers must come to an end. Fortunately for Havre High senior Haley Ohm, her final prep basketball and track seasons could end on a couple of high notes.
Ohm is currently rounding out her final season as a Blue Pony basketball player. It has been a four-year career that will come to an end this weekend at the Class A state tournament in Great Falls. As the Ponies’ post player, her play could be crucial in how HHS does at the Four Seasons Arena. This season, Ohm is averaging just under five points and just under four rebounds per game, and she leads the team with her 57 percent shooting from the field.
A state title would be the biggest accomplishment for Ohm and the rest of the Ponies. But after the season’s end, Ohm can also push for state glory in her final track season.
As a distance runner, Ohm has shown she can be elite. She has competed at the state level, but has yet to place. In her lone season of cross country earlier this year, Ohm placed in the Top 15 and earned All -State honors. Ohm will look to carry a couple of state appearances this season into track as well.
In her sophomore year, Ohm also earned academic honors. With college plans in the works, Ohm is looking to advance her education. Ohm has not decided on a school just yet, but does know she wants to major in chemical engineering.
Ohm took time to answer five questions with the Havre Daily News before heading to Great Falls for the state tournament.
HDN: You still have a big basketball weekend left ahead of you, but are you also getting excited for your senior track season?
Ohm: “Yes, I am getting excited for that, the weather is nice and that brings back a lot of memories of running outside. I am excited, but I am still really focused on this weekend.”
HDN: What do you have to do well to be an impact player at the state tournament?
Ohm: “I need to rebound and I need to play good defense. Those are my two main goals that I need to keep working on. If I can rebound I can get more points or either help the team by kicking it out to (our shooters).”
HDN: When and why did you first get interested in running?
Ohm: “It was my eighth-grade year and it was just something to do. It turned out I was kind of good at it, so I kept doing it and got better and better. The more I ran, and the better I got, the more I got into it. I wish I would have ran cross country more than one year, but in middle school I just ran track.”
HDN: After your high school sports career comes to an end, how do you plan on spending all your free time?
Ohm: “I am going to be working a lot to pay for college, but I will probably still play some basketball and run with friends in my free time.”
HDN: How confident is the team that you guys can win a state title this weekend?
Ohm: “I think we are very confident, I think that we can do it. We know anything can happen, so we have to keep our brains in every game. We can’t think a game is going to be easy. We need to act like they can beat us so we always play our hardest.”
