Bears complete perfect regular season
As expected, it the final week of the boys basketball regular season was an exciting one on the Hi-Line. But now area teams will turn their attention to upcoming district tournaments and state championship dreams.
This past week was a coronation for the Box Elder Bears as they tried to cap a perfect regular season. They started their run with an 86-59 win over Tri-Cities Thursday night in Box Elder. Randall Gardipee scored 20 points, Lonnie Plain Bull added 17 and Jerrod Four Colors added 15 in the Bears win.
Friday night, the top-ranked Bears were home for another non-conference game, and the result was no different as they dismantled 10C rival Sunburst 80-39. Gardipee poured in 18 points to lead the way, while Chris Lamere added 12.
In a key District 9C game Friday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters held on to second place with a 62-21 win at North Star. Lane Seymour scored 15 points for the Beeters, while Jake Diemert added 12 and Zach Molyneaux chipped in with 11. Jaxon Simonson scored eight for the Knights.
Hays-Lodge Pole kept pace with the Beeters in the 9C race with a 97-28 win over Turner Friday night. HLP got off to a 26-8 start and never looked back. Tyson Shambo was unstoppable for the Thunderbirds, scoring a game-high 32 points, while Lucas Reed and Brett VanValkenburg scored 19 and 18, respectively, for Turner.
In Class B action Friday night, the Rocky Boy Stars got a big weekend off to a great start. While Rocky Boy would go on to blow out Havre Saturday night, the Stars first took care of Conrad 90-77 in Rocky Boy. The huge 1B win saw five Stars in double figures, including 19 points from Junior Day Child and 15 by Bubby Gopher.
Harlem notched a big 2B win Friday as well. The Wildcats upended rival Wolf Point 49-44 in overtime. Playing on senior night, the Wildcats had to come back from a small deficit in the fourth quarter to force the extra period. But they out-scored the Wolves 7-2 in the extra frame. Stanley Irvine scored 10 points to lead Harlem.
Friday night also saw Chester/J-I blast Heart Butte 73-41 in Chester. The Hawks held on to second place in the 10C standings in the win. Steven May scored a game-high 16 points to lead C/J-I while Sion Norick added 11.
In their final game of the season, the Hawks finished the regular season with a big rivalry win over the Chinook Sugarbeeters in Chinook. In thrilling fashion, the Hawks edged the Beeters 54-53. The game was tied at 28-28 at halftime, and C/J-I was up heading into the fourth quarter. But the Beeters fought back and both teams had chances to put the game away down the stretch, but it was C/J-I who did it at the end.
Justin May scored 14 points and Dell Harmon added 12 for the Hawks (10-2, 15-3). Ian McIntosh scored a game-high 17 points for Chinook (7-3, 11-7), while Zach Molyneaux added 15.
Saturday night also saw Box Elder complete its perfect season with ease. At home, the Bears dismantled Turner 67-33. Jerrod Four Colors scored 15 points to lead the Bears (10-0, 18-0), while Lucas Reed scored a game-high 17 for the Tornadoes (2-8, 5-13).
North Star finished its season with a loss to powerful Denton-Stanford-Geyser Saturday night. The Trojans beat the visiting Knights 83-41. Sam Ulmen scored 10 points and Matt Helmbrecht added eight for the Knights (4-6, 5-13).
In another 9C showdown, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds took care of the Big Sandy Pioneers in Big Sandy. The T-Birds finished the season 13-5 overall and 7-3 in the 9C, while Big sandy went 0-18 and 0-10.
Harlem also ended the regular season with a 2B loss at Plentywood, 58-38. The Wildcats (4-6, 6-12) got 13 points from Anthony Gray in the loss.
District tournaments will be held this week. The 9C tourney begins Wednesday in Havre, the 10C will be held in Conrad, the 1B takes place in Cut Bank and the 2B will be played in Malta.
