Bears continue to roll; T-Birds win a pair
After another week of prep boys basketball games, district tournaments are now just three weeks away.
Last Thursday night, the third-place District 9C Chinook Sugarbeeters captured a dominating win, defeating Dodson 81-29 in Chinook. The Beeters' 25 first-quarter points and 27 second-quarter points propelled them into a huge lead they never gave up. Layne Seymour scored a game-high 21 points. Zach Molyneaux also scored 14, followed by Jacob MacLean’s 12.
But local action really picked up on Friday.
Top-ranked Box Elder defeated the 9C rival North Star Knights 67-38 in Gildford. The Knights got 12 points by Jaxon Simonson and 11 points from Gavin Spinler, but couldn’t keep pace with the league-leading Bears. The Bears 38-17 first-half lead was never challenged. Lonnie Plain Bull Jr. led the Bears with 12 points followed by Jaren Four Colors’ 11.
The Bears improved to 8-0 in the 9C and 13-0 overall with their two wins over the weekend. But a couple more 9C teams also met on Friday as they continue to chase Box Elder in the standings.
Second-place Hays Lodge-Pole defeated the third-place Chinook Sugarbeeters by a narrow score of 58-55 in Hays Friday night. The Thunderbirds outscored the Beeters 15-5 to open the game and that proved to be the difference as the Beeters went on a run late to outscore the Thunderbirds 32-28 in the second half.
Zach Molyneaux and Layne Seymour led the Beeters with 13 points each, but Jake Diemert kicked in 11. But it wasn’t quite enough as Tyson Shambo led the Thunderbirds with 17, followed by Sterling White Cow’s 13 and Keenan Stiffarm’s 10. Shambo had five 3-pointers.
The fifth-place Turner Tornadoes also defeated the sixth-place Big Sandy Pioneers 47-32 in a 9C meeting in Big Sandy on Friday. The Tornadoes dominated more of the game than the final score shows as they outscored the Pioneers 28-10 in the first half. Big Sandy also scored just seven in the third quarter, followed by a 15-5 fourth to help narrow the gap.
Big Sandy got 16 points by TJ Shipp and 10 from Cody Bailey. Turner got 18 points from Lucas Reed and eight from Dylan Welsh.
In 2B action Friday night, the Harlem Wildcats ran into a talented Malta team at home. The Mustangs defeated the Wildcats 58-49. The Wildcats were in control of the game early on, but couldn’t hold on for the win. Harlem held Malta to just six points in the first quarter, but then gave up 16 in the second, 16 in the third, and 20 in the fourth. Dutch Helgeson and Stanley Irvine led Harlem with 13 points each, with Tyler Doney adding 12.
Chester/J-I also played on Friday, and in 10C action the Hawks dominated Valier 71-37 in Chester. The Hawks put an exclamation point on the win with a 26-point fourth quarter, finishing with scorers like Justin May grabbing 18 points and Tim Stokes scoring 12. Brandon Richter also had nine and Steven May had eight for the Hawks.
When local action resumed on Saturday, the Hawks also grabbed a 47-40 win over Dutton Brady in Chester. There were no statistics submitted, but the two wins lifted the Hawks to a 12-2 record overall as they maintain their No. 2 seed in the 10C standings behind Power.
Big Sandy also played its second game of the weekend, but suffered another tough loss. No individual statistics were submitted, but Tri-Cities defeated the Pioneers 58-28, as the Pioneers remain winless on the season.
Harlem suffered its second loss of the weekend as the Wildcats dropped to 5-9 on the season and 3-4 in the 2B standings. On Saturday Cut Bank defeated the Wildcats 47-33 in non-league action in Cut Bank. The Wildcats started and finished strong with 11 points in the first and fourth quarters, but struggled in the middle stretch. With just 11 points combined through the second and third frames, Cut Bank was able to run away with the lead. Tristen Gone was also the only double-digit scorer for Harlem with 13 points.
Turner wasn’t able to grab a second win on Saturday as the Tornadoes ran into a tough non-conference Hinsdale team. Hinsdale defeated the Tornadoes 70-30 in Turner. Giving up quarters like a 26 point second quarter did the Tornadoes in as the offense just couldn’t keep pace. Turner also had no double-digit scorers, led by Welsh and Reed with nine points each. After the weekend Turner is now 5-9 overall and 2-5 in the league standings.
In the weekend’s final 9C matchup, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds did defeat the North Star Knights 41-34 in Hays. It was a strong first half that helped the Thunderbirds take down the Knights. North Star played well in the first half, but HLP took a 19-13 lead into the half. That was crucial as the Thunderbirds only outscored the Knights 22-21 in the second half, led by Shambo’s 13 points. The Knights were paced by Sam Ulmen’s 14. Hays Lodge-Pole is now 10-3 overall and 5-1 in the 9C and North Star is now 5-9 overall and 4-5 in the 9C.
Rocky Boy also got a dominating win on Saturday over the 1B rival Shelby Coyotes. But even with the 80-62 win the Stars remain in the middle of the 1B pack as the regular season’s end draws closer and closer. The Stars cruised through the first three quarters of action and capped off the win with 31 points in the fourth and final frame. Junior Day Child led the Stars with 17 points, while Desmond Parker and Skylar Parisian both added 15 each.
