Rustlers edge Ponies on the mat

The CMR Fieldhouse was not a welcoming atmosphere to the Havre High wrestling team Tuesday night, as the Class AA CMR Rustlers sent the top-ranked Central A Blue Ponies away with a rare dual loss.

Going head to head in Great Falls, the fourth-ranked Rustlers, coached by former Blue Pony Aaron Jensen, defeated the Ponies 42-39.

The biggest story in Tuesday night’s action was the matches the Rustlers were able to turn around against the Ponies. Jace Billy (195) and Dustin Odegard (182) have dominated recent matches against Payton Sexe and Noah Danielson, respectively, but this time around the script was flipped. That was crucial in CMR’s three-point win as CMR took a three-point lead with Sexe’s 8-4 decision over Billy. Nick Nordell also followed with a pin over the Ponies’ John Chinadle (220) in 3:52 to seal the deal.

The night ended with Havre’s Tyler Adams (HWT) pinning K.J. Klingaman in 1:25.

Unfortunately, the Ponies were without top-ranked Keegan Kennelly (106) and that forfeit proved costly in a dual dominated by pins on both sides. Six HHS grapplers did earn wins. Logan Pleninger (113) pinned Gavin Martin in 28 seconds and Grayson Brenna (120) followed with a pin over Tanner Tovson in 1:01. Dylan Stewart (126) also pinned David Bennyhoff in 28 seconds, while Thomas Gruber (132) pinned Tanner Grubb in 5:05. Parker Filius (138) pinned Chase Marmon in 5:35 and Jake Williams earned a 7-1 decision over Travis Brugman.

Aside from the crucial wins in the upper weights, CMR also beat Blue Ponies four more matches. Devin Altenberg pinned Tate Munyan (98) in 1:22, Isiah Yates pinned Kody Pribyl (145) in 3:02, Jared Dickson pinned Jase Stokes (152) in 3:30 and Nick Grassechi pinned Jared Laux (160) in 4:05.

Since Havre will not be making the trip to Conrad Thursday night, the Ponies’ dual season has come to an end. The Ponies will attend the Malta Invitational Saturday.
