Lights win two duals

The Montana State University-Northern Lights wrestling team continues to have holes in its lineup, but the Lights also continue to press on.

Northern captured two road dual wins this past weekend, wrapping up its regular season road schedule in the process.

Friday night, the No. 3 Lights beat NJCAA power Northwest College for the second time this season, then the Lights took down Western Wyoming for the second time in seven days.

Friday night in Powell, Wyo., neither the Lights, nor the second-ranked Trappers were near full strength in MSU-N’s 15-5 win. The teams were open at four different weight classes, while MSU-N lost just one match on the mat, Mickey Cheff (157), Garrett Demers (197) and Jorrell Jones (HWT) all scored wins for the Lights, as did Jared Miller at 174. He scored a big 9-6 win over Northwest’s Cole McArthur, a former Montana Class A star.

Northern then moved on to wrestle Western Wyoming Saturday in Rock Springs, and the result was similar to the Jan. 18 dual when Western came to Havre, as the Lights won 33-20.

The Lights won three matches on the mat, while they picked up forfeits at 165, 197 and heavyweight. Northern also gave up a forfeit at 125. Cameron Neiss dominated his 141-pound bout, while Miller and Kody Reed also scored identical technical fall victories.

The Lights will return home to host Emrby-Riddle University, a Northern Region rival, this Saturday night. MSU-N wraps up the regular season with its annual showdown with UGF Feb. 12 in Havre.
