Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

Big Sandy wins a thriller; C/J-I rebounds

Another week of girls basketball on the Hi-Line down, and with it, teams are one step closer to the stretch run. February marks the beginning of the end to the basketball season, and teams will begin to peak.

Some teams are trying to peak now, and this past week saw plenty of that, as well as some unexpected upsets.

Last Tuesday night saw Rocky Boy and Harlem renew its Class B rivalry in Harlem. But it was the visiting Morning Stars who came away with a thrilling 59-57 win. The Morning Stars stormed out to a 32-14 lead, but Harlem rallied late, and had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds. It wasn’t to be however, and the Morning Stars escaped.

Jude The Boy scored 16 points for Rocky Boy, while Jaylynn Day Child added 13. Jaycee Werk poured in a game-high 20 for Harlem, and Tescha Ereaux added 15.

A big District 9C weekend actually started last Thursday night when the North Star Knights ran away from the Big Sandy Pioneers 46-30 in Rudyard. North Star led 23-16 at half and slowly pulled away from there.

Bettie Carlon scored 16 points and Sheridan O'Neil added 11 for the Knights. Big Sandy got 11 points each from Brooke Leader and Molly Herron in the tough loss.

In more 9C action Friday night, the unbeaten Chinook Sugarbeeters had to fight to get by the young Box Elder Bears, 67-59. The game was tight most of the way but the Bears couldn’t quite catch the Beeters in the second half.

Mahkayla Farmer totaled 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Beeters, while Katelyn Neibauer added 16 and Emily Dennis chipped in with 11. Box Elder was paced by 17 points from Krista Chief Stick and 12 by Alicia Wolf Chief.

Other 9C teams didn’t fare as well Friday night.

In Hays, the winless Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds were drubbed by Moore-Judith Gap, 81-40. It was HLP’s best offensive output of the season, but it wasn’t enough. Treaunna Stiffarm did score 15 points for the T-Birds.

Turner also suffered a big loss Friday night, falling 86-46 at Dodson. The Tornadoes got 17 points from Ella Billmayer and 13 from Kristina Conlan in the loss.

In Class B action, the Morning Stars couldn’t quite make it two straight, as they were thumped in Cut Bank, 61-30. The Wolves led 33-19 at half, and from there Rocky Boy really struggled, scoring just 11 points in the final 16 minutes. Kylee Raining Bird paced Rocky Boy with seven points.

After Chinook handed them their first loss of the season on Jan. 17, the Chester/J-I Hawks bounced back in a big way. On Friday night, the Hawks blasted rival Sunburst 73-26 in Chester. A 26-6 run in the second quarter was all that the Hawks needed to cruise to an easy win. Haley Harmon scored a game-high 16 points for C/J-I, while Denerey Haaland added 14.

The Hawks then made it two straight at home, as they fought past arch rival Simms Saturday night. The game was a dogfight in the first half, and was knotted at 19-19 at intermission. But C/J-I outscored the Tigers 27-18 the rest of the way.

Allix Goldhahn scored 11 points as did Erin Wolfe in the win for C/J-I.

The North Star Knights also made it two straight as they crushed Turner 63-34 Saturday night in Turner. The Knights out-scored the Tornadoes 14-2 at the start and never looked back.

Bettie Carlon again led the way for North Star, scoring 15 points. But she got plenty of help as McKenzie Hansen added 13 and Tylynn Rettig scored 10. Rennay Watkins led Turner with 14 points.

Big Sandy bounced back Saturday night, winning a wild 56-55 game with 9C rival Box Elder in Big Sandy. Leading by just one point at halftime, Big Sandy went on a 15-5 run in the third quarter and appeared to have the game locked up. But Box Elder roared back, scoring 20 points in the final stanza, and nearly pulling off a dramatic comeback.

Brooke Leader poured in 19 points and Molly Herron added 11 for Big Sandy. The Bears got 10 points each from Krista Chief Stick and Alicia Wolf Chief in the heartbreaking loss.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters also felt heartache for the first time in 2014. The seventh-ranked Beeters suffered a 37-31 set back Saturday night at home against 7C power Roy-Winifred. Chinook trailed the entire night, and never got going offensively. Makahyla Farmer was the only Beeter to reach double figures, scoring 12 points.

Things were much worse for HLP Saturday night. The struggling T-Birds were blasted by Winnett-Grass Range, 83-7 in Winnett. The 7C Rams showed no mercy and HLP failed to score a single point in the second half. Cory Carrywater notched three points in the contest.

However, Harlem did have a great Saturday night. In a rivalry game, the Wildcats beat Poplar 77-35 in Poplar. Ticia Cliff scored 19 points for Harlem while teammates Jaycee Werk and Brooke Lavaldo added 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Finally, Monday night saw the Box Elder Bears host the Heart Butte Warriors in a makeup game. And it was no contest as the Bears drubbed the Warriors 70-42. Alicia Wolf Chief led the way with 18 points, while Stephanie Sutherland added 14 for the Bears.
