It was another busy weekend of wrestling on the Hi-Line.
Area teams squared off in matches at the Chinook Mixer Friday night, then they competed at the Harlem Invitational Saturday in Harlem.
As expected, the Class B Wildcats came out on top at home, scoring 145 points to win the team title. Chinook was fourth with 80 points, while Chester/J-I scored 31.
For the third straight week, Harlem’s Shay Snider and Teague Jones captured individual titles. Snider, named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler, beat rival Travis Vermulm of Cut Bank 5-0 in the 126-pound final. At 132, Jones pinned Glasgow’s Cody King in just 55 seconds. Jones won the Quick Pin Award for the tournament.
Brendan Johnson added another first for the Wildcats, beating Fort Benton’s P.J. Ayers in the 145-pound final, while Seth Adams pinned Wolf Point’s David Knerr in the 220-pound title match. Harlem also got a second-place finish from Denton Cornell, who lost to C/J-I’s Sam Deffinbaugh in the 160-pound title match, as well as Trent Noel, who was pinned by Malta’s Kelin King in the heavyweight finale. T’Jay Allen (132), John Bell (138), Kevin Hawley (152) and Colten Stiffarm (HWT) all placed third for the Wildcats, while Challence Jackson placed fourth at 120 pounds.
“We wrestled well at each of the two meets along with being very intense and aggressive in all of our matches,” Harlem head coach Lyle Faulkinberry said. “It was nice to be at home and showcase our team in front of the home crowd. Anytime we are in our own gym I think it helps in the intensity in front of the crowd, and we had a great crowd for the tourney.”
It was another strong showing for Chinook, too. After celebrating senior night Friday, the Beeters advanced four grapplers to the Harlem Invite finals, with Tate Niederegger winning a title at 120 pounds. He win by technical fall over Connor DeBruckyer of Fort Benton in the finale. Donovan Moon placed second for Chinook at 113 pounds, as did Ken Pruittis at 152 and Kevin Young at 170. Jake Norby finished third for the Beeters at 126, while Gage Haugen was third at 220 pounds.
Harlem and Chinook wrap up the regular season at this weekend’s Malta Invitational. Harlem is the host site of the Northern B-C Divisional, which is set for Feb. 8.
