Dogs shot near North Havre home

Two pit bulls who got out of their backyard were shot with a shotgun near their home in North Havre.

Ashlee Keeling, the owner of the two dogs, Loki and Kilo, said she and her family were getting ready to leave their house on 5th Street North when they heard someone at the door. A neighbor had come to her door with the two dogs, bleeding.

"Loki was bleeding profusely out of the mouth ... ," Keeling said. "I was freaking out. I thought he was dying."

Her neighbor said she and her husband were at their home when they heard a gunshot and not a minute later, they saw the dogs running.

Keeling called the Hill County Sheriff's Office around 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Keeling said deputies thought the dogs were both hit with one shotgun shot and that it was fairly close- range.

Hill County Undersheriff Jamie Ross said the dogs were at large when they got shot, so they have no leads since they don't know where they were when they were hit.

"It's kind of a dead-end thing at this point," Ross said.

Keeling took Loki and Kilo to Bear Paw Veterinary Services and the next day they were back home.

The male pit bull, Loki, got most of the shot, Keeling said, and his right eye was injured. Kilo was shot as well and had BBs lodged in her right side.

"The vet said they'll be fine," Keeling said.

The dogs got through a loose board in the fence that was still being put up around Keeling's backyard, she said. From there, they went up to the dike that runs behind 5th Street North and that is where Keeling thinks they were shot.

"We followed the blood up to on the dike," Keeling said. "We have no clue who did it. The person could not have shot from their house, so I don't think it was a neighbor."

Keeling said the dogs being pit bulls might have something to do with the gunshots.

Pit bulls are commonly labeled with being a vicious breed and someone walking along the dike may have had similar notions and shot the dogs.

Keeling said Loki and Kilo are very friendly dogs and are not vicious at all.

"Even the vet said they're one of the nicest dogs she's ever had, and she thinks they just got shot because they were pit bulls," Keeling said.

deflave writes:

I almost had to shoot another dog this very same day, and not far from where this took place. I think people that can't control their dogs should purchase something called a leash. Google it if you're not familiar.

Supporter writes:

so, are you guys saying its ok to shoot dogs who manage to get out of their designated areas? I seen a small black dog running after a tahoe with a trailor just today, on the northside. Can i shoot it? Give me a break!!!

Kyle writes:

@ DOGS Use some common sense I understand all dogs can be aggressive, but science and studies have shown pitbulls to be one of the more aggressive breads of dogs there is. And how would a stranger know they have been trained, if they had been abused etc??

northsider writes:

I live not to far from where these dogs live. They are out running all the time. I've seen them playing out in the hiway and running into everyones yards and jumping fences. I have also seen them tied up outside in front of the house and they were so tangled up in each others rope that they couldn't move and they were barking and whining and the door to the house was open and no one came to help them. Shame on these owners for not keeping better track of their dogs.

children writes:

what if these two dogs owner was a kid and he or she was chasing after them and the person shot the little kid? and who goes on a stroll by the river carrying a shot gun? sounds kind of scary to me.

dogs writes:

sterotype pitbulls no matter what

dogs writes:

any dog can be vicious to a stranger NO MATTER what kind of dog it is, its known these dogs were not attacking anyone because they would have been shot in the face if they were attacking anyone not the side of the body and head. I know these dogs personally and I was once a stranger to them and they never once showed me aggression at anytime, but of course everyone raises their dogs differently and every situation is different I have known german shepherds to be vicious also. But people always

Grumpy writes:

If the dogs were running at large and not in the city limits then they should be shot. The problem with this shooting is the shooter failed to shoot until they both were dead. I would have shot to kill also and I guarantee the dogs would not have made it home on their own power.

The dogs we shot out of town not in their yard. Sounds reasonable to me.

Kyle writes:

They should take the dogs if you cant properly take care of a pit bull then you shouldnt have them. I had a cousin die from a pit bull attack in Washingtion state at the age of 6 and I myself had over 200 stitches from a different pit bull attack. I dont care how nice you think they are, its an animal that can become vicious at anytime especially around strangers etc. Given my past I may have done the same thing if a loose pitbull came up on me.
