Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

Beeters win two big ones; Tornadoes prevail

It was another action-packed week of girls high school basketball on the Hi-Line. And while the busy week got started last Tuesday, the big game was played Saturday night.

The undefeated and seventh-ranked Chester/J-I Hawks and unbeaten and ninth-ranked Chinook Sugarbeeters went head-to-head Saturday night in a non-conference rivalry game. And while the Hawks may have been the home team, it mattered none to the Beeters, who ran away with the game, 59-40. Chinook used a big second-quarter surge to take a 32-23 lead at halftime, and the Beeters played well in the second half, and won by a comfortable margin.

Katelyn Neibauer scored 16 points and Tavin Schneider added 12 in the big Chinook win. C/J-I got 15 points from freshman Allix Goldhahn in its first loss of the season. The rematch will take place Feb. 15 in Chinook.

Meanwhile, back on Tuesday night, The Rocky Boy Morning Stars finally made up their weather-postponed game with the Choteau Bulldogs. But things didn’t go well for Rocky Boy as the Bulldogs won 60-31 in Choteau. Chanal Standing Rock scored 15 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Bulldogs in the District 1B clash.

Thursday night, the Turner Tornadoes scored their first win of the season, and it was a District 9C win to boot. In Turner, the Tornadoes crushed winless Hays-Lodge Pole 55-34.

All four Turner players that scored did so in double figures, led by Ella Billmayer’s 20 points. Kristina Conlan added 14 for Turner, while Rose Snell scored a team-high 13 points for the Thunderbirds.

As the action turned to Friday night, the Beeters were involved in another huge Hi-Line game. This time, first place in the 9C was on the line as Chinook hosted North Star. And thanks to yet another big first half offensively, the Beeters remained undefeated as they turned away the Knights, 55-41. Chinook outscored North Star 31-21 in the first 16 minutes, and though the Knights played valiantly, they couldn’t get any closer in the second half.

Katelyn Neibauer was again the catalyst, scoring 19 points. Makhayla Farmer added 16 for the Beeters. Bettie Carlon paced the Knights with 12 points, while Kiera Miller added eight in North Star’s first conference loss.

Friday night also saw C/J-I get its week started right. In Heart Butte, the Hawks crushed the Warriors 70-34 behind a combined 41 points from Denerey Haaland (21) and Madeline Woods (20).

The Box Elder girls took down a 10C rival as well. The Bears traveled to Sunburst and thumped the winless Refiners, 73-36. Box Elder led 34-17 at the half, and a 19-4 third-quarter run put the game out of reach. Leilani Gardipee hit two 3-pointers and scored 20 points to lead Box Elder. She got help from Alicia Wolf Chief, who scored 11 points, and Alyssa LaMere, who added 10.

Friday night wasn’t as kind to Big Sandy in nonconference play. The Pioneers were home to host Roy-Winifred, but it was the Outlaws who came away with the win, 62-39. In the loss, the Pioneers got a season-high 25 points from senior Molly Herron.

In Class B action Friday night, Rocky Boy’s struggle continued. Back at home, the Morning Stars dropped a 1B game to Conrad, 55-38. On the night before the Morning Stars would fall in Havre, Chanal Standing Rock scored 18 points and Kylee Raining Bird added 10.

Harlem also fell Friday night. The Wildcats were locked in a tight 2B battle with rival Wolf Point, but came up short, 40-35. Harlem trailed 23-15 at the half, but fought back in the fourth quarter, only to run out of time. Jaycee Werk led the Wildcats with 10 points, while Monique Doney scored six.

A full slate of games was on tap Saturday night, and both North Star and Big Sandy found their way back into the win column.

In Rudyard, the Knights thumped Denton-Stanford-Geyser 58-33. North Star’s defense was stout all night, while Mackenzie Hansen, Tylynn Rettig and Bettie Carlon each scored 10 points, and Alyssa Borlaug added nine.

In a 9C game in Hays Saturday night, the Pioneers score well beyond the host Thunderbirds. Big Sandy won 65-13. Molly Herron again scored 25 points, while Brooke Leader added 12 and Kiah Wilson notched 10. Treaunna Stiffarm led HLP with just four points.

In another 9C showdown Saturday, Box Elder made it a weekend sweep. Playing at home, the Bears clobbered Turner 70-26. Leilani Gardipee scored a game-high 13 points, but the Bears were balanced as Krista Chief Stick and Stephanie Sutherland each scored 10. Lyndsay Hutton led Turner with eight points.

And in another 2B game, Harlem once again came up short. At home Saturday night, the Wildcats were blown out by Plentywood 63-48. Chassanna Doney scored 13 for Harlem, while Jaycee Werk added 10 in the loss,

The action-packed week of hoops didn’t end until Monday night when the Turner Tornadoes picked up their second win of the season. Turner beat the Havre High freshman team 43-38 in a tight game at the HHS gymnasium.

After taking the lead in the third quarter, and again early in the fourth, it looked like the Blue Ponies would put the game away. But in the final eight minutes, Turner outscored Havre 18-14 and escaped with a much-needed victory.

Ella Billmayer scored 21 points to lead Turner, while Lyndsay Hutton chipped in with 11. Madison Tommerup scored 11 points to lead HHS.
