Remus wins Dr. Jim Elliott award

Barry Remus was chosen to receive the Dr. Jim Elliott Memorial Award for his volunteerism and dedication to Havre High School.

Remus was nominated for his work with the concessions stands at high school sporting events. He organized and ran the concessions stands for many years at basketball, football and baseball games and was previously the president of the Blue Pony Booster Club while his children were in high school.

Remus said he started running the concessions stands because nobody wanted to do it. He said he still ran it after his kids left the school and organized and ran the stand for the Havre baseball league for 28 years.

"You were there because you were trying to help get money for the kids' programs," Remus said. "I never did any of this stuff for an award. That's why it came as a shock."

Brenda Evans, president of the Blue Pony Booster Club, presented the award to Remus Saturday at the Havre High School girls basketball game. Evans said the award was established in 2001, by Elliott's family and was eventually put into the charge of the booster club.

"It's not just for a fan," Evans said. "It's based on volunteerism along with personal and professional sacrifice for the high school. It's intended for someone who truly makes an impact on Havre High School activities and athletics."

Elliott was a doctor in Havre who for many years gave free sports physicals to HHS athletes. Remus said Elliott was his family's doctor when he moved to Havre after he got out of military service.

"He was a great doctor; a great man," Remus said.

Remus was one of three nominees for the award this year.
