Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

Rocky Boy, Chinook, C/J-I stay perfect

This past weekend was only the second week of high school girls basketball on the Hi-Line. But it was an important one, as teams will now not return to action until after New Year’s.

The week began with some key games Thursday night, including a showdown between Rocky Boy and Harlem in Harlem. And the Morning Stars were able to remain perfect with a 66-42 win over the District 2B Wildcats. The game was close for much of the way, but Rocky Boy exploded for 26 points in the fourth quarter.

And the big story was Rocky Boy senior Chanal Standing Rock, who poured in 40 points, including four 3-pointers as Harlem’s defense had no answer for the dynamic scorer. Coco Moore had 11 points in the loss for Harlem.

Turner opened its season Thursday night, and while the Tornadoes look much-improved this season, they suffered a 38-33 loss at home against the Havre High freshman team. Ella Billmeyer scored 19 points in the losing effort for the Tornadoes, while Kalissa Two Crow led the Blue Ponies with 12 points.

North Star got into the win column Thursday night, in what was a big early-season clash with the Big Sandy Pioneers. In the key 9C matchup, the Knights used big runs in the second and third quarters to pull away and win 60-48. Bettie Carlon scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Knights, while Mackenzie Hansen added 13 points. Senior Molly Herron scored a game-high 20 for the Pioneers, and Shelby Gasvoda chipped in with 11.

In an important 10C game Thursday night, the Chester/J-I Hawks grabbed an early leg up, by beating the Simms Tigers 58-54 in Simms. The Hawks were out in front 34-22 at halftime, but had to hold off a furious Simms’ second-half rally.

Haley Harmon led all scorers with 25 points, while C/J-I also got 17 from Denerey Haaland and 11 by freshman Alixx Goldhahn.

C/J-I added a second 10C win to its resume Friday night. Back in Chester, the Hawks thrashed rival Sunburst 68-25. Haaland was the catalyst with 21 points, but Harmon added 15 and Goldhahn scored 14 as C/J-I is now 4-0 on the year.

Rocky Boy also made it 4-for-4 to start the season. In their 1B opener Friday night in Rocky Boy, the Morning Stars blew out Cut Bank, 66-49. Chanal Standing Rock was big again, scoring 20 points, but she got plenty of help. Jude The Boy chipped in with 17 points and Minnie The Boy scored 10.

Things didn’t go as well for Turner, which lost its second straight game Friday night. At home, Turner fell to Dodson 72-48. Ella Billmeyer again scored 19 points for the Tornadoes, while Kristina Conlan added 14.

Chinook got a great weekend off to a great start Friday night by thumping 9C rival Box Elder, 65-32 in Chinook. In the 9C opener for both teams, the Sugarbeeters were led by Makhayla Farmer’s 21 points and 16 rebounds, while Hannah Weber scored 12, and Emily Dennis and Tavin Schneider each added 10. The Bears got 11 points by Krista Chief Stick and another nine from Stephanie Sutherland.

And the Beeters weren’t done. Saturday night, they took to the road and thoroughly beat 7C power Roy-Winifred, 68-42. Chinook got started early, scoring 21 points in the first eight minutes. The Beeters added 48 points in the second half as well.

Chinook was extremely balanced against the Outlaws. Farmer and Weber each totaled 16 points, while Dennis and Katelyn Neibauer scored 15 apiece.

North Star made it a weekend sweep, too. In Gildford on Saturday night, the Knights handed Turner their third straight defeat. North Star out-scored the Tornadoes 27-4 in the first quarter and never looked back in a 59-30 win.

The Knights had 15 different players make the box score, with Mackenzie Hansen leading the way with 11 points. Kristina Conlan scored 14 points in the loss for Turner.

Harlem also managed an important bounce-back win Saturday night. At home against 2B rival Poplar, the Wildcats won 61-53. Harlem led 31-26 at the break, and the two teams played a good battle in the second half, but the Wildcats were able to hold the Indians off in the fourth quarter.

Jaycee Werk poured in a game-high 25 points, hitting four 3-pointers to lead the Wildcats, while Techa Ereaux hit three trey’s and added 15 points.

All area teams will now be off for the holiday break, with action resuming Jan. 2-4.
