Bears, Hawks earn important district wins
There will be short break in Hi-Line basketball action with the holiday break, but hopefully local fans got their fill until play resumes.
Thursday, the Harlem Wildcats hosted the Rocky Boy Stars in Class B action, and the Stars continued their solid start to the season with a 60-49 win on the road.
Harlem led the contest 14-11 early, but the Stars ran away with the win with a 17 point second quarter and 18 point fourth quarter. Isaiah Laurence carried the Wildcats with 14 points, but it wasn’t quite enough. Anthony Gray and Tristin Gone kicked in 11 points each. Rocky Boy was led by Desmond Parker’s 22 points, while Isiah Murie followed with 12 and Cecil Lafromboise finished with 13 down low.
The 10C Chester/J-I Hawks were also in action Thursday, and grabbed a one-point victory on the road.
Playing in Simms, the Hawks narrowly escaped the Tigers 48-47. Justin May’s 16 points played a major role in the Hawks’ victory, as did Dell Harmon’s 14. But after trailing through the first half, it took the Hawks outscoring the Tigers 28-24 to return home with the win. Klayton Lohr finished with six points in the win.
Turner also got into the win column Thursday, as the Tornadoes took down the Havre Freshmen 67-59 in Turner.
The Tornadoes have shown a lot of improvement in recent seasons, and are looking for another step up this year. They showed some promise as four players managed to score in double digits. Lucas Reed finished with 24, Dylan Welsh finished with 14, Bret Van Valkenburg finished with 11, and Tyler Humphreys finished with 10.
Nate Korb, Jacob LaBrie, and Isaac Warp led the Pony freshman with 11 points each. Warp had three 3-pointers. Ryan Bakke had eight points for the Ponies.
In 9C action, the North Star Knights and Big Sandy Pioneers faced off in Big Sandy Thursday. The Knights exposed the Pioneers’ youth with a dominating 67-40 win.
Geno Menard and Cody Bailey combined for 21 points, but the Pioneers just couldn’t keep pace as the Knights posted 23 points in the first quarter alone. The Knights added 16-, 18- and 10-point quarters to run away with the win.
Cooper Spicher led all scorers with 23, and Sam Ulmen finished with 12. Quinn Spinler and Gavin Spinler finished with a well-rounded eight points each, as well.
When play across the Hi-Line continued Friday, the Box Elder Bears and Chinook Sugarbeeters met in 9C action.
Playing in Chinook, the Beeters put up some decent numbers, but couldn’t limit the scoring of the 9C-favored Bears. The Bears defeated the Beeters 80-63 to remain undefeated on the season.
The game remained close through the first half, but it was only a matter of time before the Bears got rolling. They led 34-23 at the break, and posted 28 points in the third quarter to put the game away. Box Elder was led by Randall Gardipee with 14, while Clayton Morsette Jr., Jacob Jones, and Brandon The Boy finished with 13 points each. The Boy had two treys and Morsette Jr. had three.
Zach Molyneaux scored a game-high 19 for the Beeters, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace. Lane Seymour finished with 17 points, while Ian McIntosh finished with 12 and Jacob MacLean finished with nine. Molyneaux had three treys for Chinook.
Turner got another win Friday over the Shelby junior varsity squad. The Tornadoes defeated Shelby 69-40.
The Tornadoes got another solid outing by Reed and his 20 points. Van Valkenburg finished with 19, while Welsh finished with 13 and Humphreys finished with 11 as the Tornadoes turned a 20 point first quarter into a lopsided win.
Chester/J-I also grabbed another win Friday, this time erupting for an 83-46 win over Sunburst.
Sunburst stayed within reach with a 14 point first quarter, but the Hawks defense allowed just nine in the second quarter, and 23 points in the second half. The offense scored at least 20 points in all four quarters.
Lohr scored 16 points and Stokes scored 14 for the Hawks. But Cody Ramberg pitched in 13 and Sion Norick added 10 as everybody got in on the action.
Wrapping up Friday’s action, the Class C Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds lost a tight matchup to Tri City 66-60. The Thunderbirds made a push for the win with a 17-10 fourth quarter, but simply couldn’t overcome the 56-43 deficit heading into the fourth quarter.
Sterling White Cow scored 12 for the Thunderbirds and Tyson Shambo scored 11. Nate Doney also finished with nine, while Keenan Stiffarm finished with eight and Frank Runs Above finished with seven in the losing effort.
Saturday, the Harlem Wildcats rebounded from Thursday’s loss with a 78-48 romping of the Poplar Indians in Harlem.
Gray led the Wildcats with 30 points, but eight individuals scored for the Wildcats offense that racked up a 27-7 lead in the first quarter and polished that off with a 29-12 fourth quarter. Tyler Doney finished with 13 and Stan Irvine finished with 10.
Chinook also rebounded after a tough loss earlier in the weekend to get into the win column on Saturday. The Beeters defeated Roy-Winifred 59-38 on the road.
After struggling to slow down the Bears, the Beeters limited Roy-Winifred to 21 points in the first half and just 17 in the second half. The Beeters’ 43 points scored over the span of the second and third quarters helped put the game away as Molyneaux had another huge outing. Molyneaux finished with 19 points. Seymour added another 12 and Maclean added another 11, while Cody McCracken also finished with six points.
A couple of 9C matchups wrapped up the weekend
Box Elder defeated Big Sandy 70-27, and North Star defeated Turner 63-44, as teams got very familiar with each other with league play this weekend.
Playing in Box Elder, the Bears’ 30 points in the first quarter quickly put the game out of reach. Gardipee led the Bears with 10 points and Nathan Parker finished with nine. LaMere also finished with eight, while Morsette Jr. finished with seven, The Boy finished with six, and Jerrod Four Colors finished with six.
Jerry Hanson had 14 for the Pioneers, but didn’t get much help. Bailey finished with five.
The Knights also grabbed a win with another big game by Spicher who finished with 24 points. North Star led the Tornadoes by just three after the first quarter, but steadily gained ground by outscoring the Tornadoes in every frame. Payton Peterson added 17 points for the Knights, while Ulmen followed with seven.
Turner was led by Van Valkenbrug’s 18-points, while Tristan Billmayer added seven.
