Havre High swimmers get plenty of time in the pool

The second week of the high school swimming season was a busy one for the Havre Blue Ponies. And it was also an important one, as HHS won’t compete again until early January.

The Blue Pony swim teams were in Great Falls, Friday for the Great Falls Quadrangular, and Saturday for the Great Falls relays. And going up against quality competition all weekend, Havre got plenty of good experience out of two days in the Swarthout Pool.

Friday, Havre went up against Class AA powers CMR and Great Falls High, as well as Class A rival Hardin. The Pony girls scored an impressive 110 points to finish third while the HHS boys scored 29 points, finishing fourth. CMR swept the team titles in Friday’s meet.

In the meet, the Havre girls were once again outstanding in the relays. Pony teams finished second in both the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 free relay. HHS also placed third in the 200 medley relay.

Individually, HHS had some standout performances as well, especially in the 50 free, where sophomore Lita Cammon placed first with a blazing time of 27.34. Aubri McCann placed sixth in the race with a time of 29.25 and Morgan Jappe was right behind her in seventh. Jackie Martin placed twice for the Ponies, finishing fifth in the 200 IM with a time of 3:03.66 and sixth in the 100 butterfly at 1:24.94. Lieza Reighard gave the Ponies points in the 100 free, finishing second with a time of 1:04.45, while Megan Malone placed sixth in the same race. Reighard finished eighth in the 200 free as well, while McCann took third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:20.63.

Cammon’s outstanding day included a fourth-place finish in the grueling 500 free, with a time of 6:20.07, while teammates Hannah Pepprock and Jappe finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

On the boys side, the young Blue Ponies didn’t have a lot of Top Six finishes, but they still competed hard. Zach Barnes placed second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:26.75, and he took fourth in the 500 free. Freshman Shandon Oberquell garnered a seventh-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:37.70, while senior Tomaso Perrone placed 10th in the 100 backstroke and 12th in the 50 free.

Saturday’s all relay event in Great Falls featured outstanding teams from Bozeman and Billings Central, as well as the four schools who took place in Friday’s meet. And while no Havre relay team tallied any team points, it was a good way for the Ponies to build on their relays and try out some different things.

The Ponies will be back in action on Jan. 10 when they travel to Hardin for the annual Class A Invitational.
