Turnover in Fort Belknap election

While the results of Tuesday’s election in the race in the Fort Belknap Indian Community tribal elections exactly mirrored the primary results, it brings some new faces to the tribal council at Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.

Mark L. Azure and George Horse Capture Jr. took the victory in the race for top leadership, with Azure the new president and Horse Capture the vice president. In that race, the ballots list president and vice president on one ticket.

Council members Donovan Archambault Sr. and Wesley Kill Eagle were the other candidates who advanced from the primary.

The number of votes cast for candidates in Tuesday’s election were not available this morning, only the list of winners.

President Tracy “Ching” King and Vice President Mel Lorraine Adams Doney lost in the October primary.

In the Assiniboine At-Large position, voted on by both tribes, Franklin “Randy” Perez defeated Christopher A. “Smiley” Gardipee Jr.

In the Assiniboine At-Large position voted on only by Assiniboine voters, Curtis Horn defeated incumbent Ed “Buster” Moore.

In the Gros Ventre At-Large position, voted on by both tribes, Phillip V. Shortman defeated Gena Levaldo.

In the Gros Ventre At-Large voted on by Gros Ventre only, Alvin “Jim” Kennedy defeated Harold “Jiggs” Main.

In the River Assiniboine race, incumbent Gerald “Manny” Healy retained his position, defeating Richard K. “Rick” Weasel.

In the River Gros Ventre race, incumbent Patricia “Patty” Quisno also kept her seat, beating Virginia “Carol” Kindness.

In the Mountain Assiniboine race, David Crisco defeated Max G. White Jr., in a race where the two candidates tied in the primary election with 76 votes each.

In the Mountain Gros Ventre race, Ronald “Fudd” Stiffarm defeated Warren David Morin.

The results of the primary, and now the general election, bring many new faces to the tribal council. With their loss in the primary, incumbents Archambault, Kill Eagle and vice presidential candidate “Gopher” Fox left their positions, and Quisno and Healy are the only returning members.

Congrats to Mark Azure and George HorseCapture Jr! Both very respectable men in the Fort Belknap Community! The people chose well. I have read articles about both these men and the work they have done in the past for their reservation, all very positive things. Keep up the good work!

This should serve as a warning to the current leadership of Rocky Boy.
