Chinook wins three; Rocky Boy beats Harlem

District tournaments are a mere two weeks away. And whether it’s a conference match, or a non-conference tilt, every one of them count for area high school volleyball teams.

And this past week saw many important matches up and down the Hi-Line.

Last Tuesday, the North Star Knights grabbed a hold of first place in the 6C East standings with a four-set win over rival Big Sandy. The Knights beat the Pioneers in Big Sandy by scores of 21-25, 25-23, 25-15 and 25-20. In the huge win, North Star got 14 kills from Melissa Pester and another 10 by Tylynn Rettig. Pester and Kiera Miller also combined for 14 blocks. Big Sandy was led by eight kills from Brooke Leader, while Molly Herron had seven to go along with 12 digs and two blocks.

Tuesday night was also big for the Chinook Sugarbeeters, though it was a non-conference match. In Chinook, the Beeters beat Class B rival Malta in five games by scores of 25-14, 25-16, 25-27, 23-25 and 15-3.

Chinook dominated the fifth set and got 22 kills, six blocks and five aces from Makhayla Farmer. Emily Dennis had 35 digs and Hannah Weber totaled 33 assists.

Chinook continued its winning ways on Thursday night. At home again, the Beeters dismantled Chester/J-I by scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-15. In the 6C East victory, the Beeters got eight kills each from Farmer and Katelyn Neibauer, while Farmer added seven blocks and Brooke Nicholson had 11 digs. The Hawks were led by Denerey Haaland’s six kills, two aces and seven digs.

There was a big rivalry match in Harlem Friday night, but the visiting Rocky Boy Morning Stars stole the show. Rocky Boy defeated the Wildcats by scores of 21-25, 25-23, 25-14 and 29-27. In the thrilling win, Trisha Big Knife and Codi Parker each had five kills for Rocky Boy. Big Knife also had seven aces and Rainey Singer totaled 26 digs. Erin LaMere led Harlem with 11 kills, five aces and two blocks.

North Star also kept rolling on Thursday as the Knights clobbered the Havre High junior varsity team by scores of 25-23, 25-16 and 25-9. Graysen Spicher had 26 assists and four aces, while Bettie Carlon totaled nine kills in the win.

Chinook completed a three-match sweep on Saturday with a dramatic five-set win at Denton-Geyser-Stanford. The Beeters were victorious by scores of 25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 22-25 and 15-10.

In the marathon match, Makhayla Farmer had a career-high 27 kills and 12 blocks. Emily Dennis added 29 digs.

Big Sandy also got an important win Saturday night, defeating the Roy-Winifred Outlaws by scores of 25-13, 25-21 and 25-21. Molly Herron had seven kills and one block, while Shelby Gasvoda totaled seven kills and five digs in the non-conference win.

This week will be another big one for area teams, but most teams will play their matches Tuesday-Wednesday due to the Montana teacher’s conferences this coming weekend. Look for the next Hi-Line Roundup in Monday’s Havre Daily News.
