Six games and nearly four years. That's how long it had been since the Montana State University-Northern Lights had beaten Eastern Oregon on the football said. But an explosive MSU-N offense took care of that on Saturday at Blue Pony Stadium as the Lights thumped the Mounties 45-27 in their home opener.
Northern took control by scoring 21 points in the second quarter. MSU-N led 7-0 late in the first on a Derek Lear TD strike to Orin Johnson. MSU-N then made it 14-0 early in the second when Zach McKinley capped off a 60-yard drive with a short TD run. A short TD pass to Brandt Montelius and another long bomb to Johnson put the Lights ahead 28-14 at halftime.
MSU-N added 10 points in the third quarter and a late TD run by McKinley to put the Mounties (0-3) away in the second half.
Northern improved to 2-1 in the Frontier Conference and will host winless Dickinson State next Saturday at Blue Pony Stadium.
