Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup

With conference play about to begin, area volleyball teams were busy getting ready this past weekend. Two big tournaments were on tap locally, and both provided ample opportunity for Hi-Line teams to work on things and get ready for the conference season.

The North Star Showcase was held in Gildford and Rudyard Friday and Saturday, and featured several District 6C East teams, as well as Rocky Boy and a host of tough Class C schools.

In the Rudyard Pool Friday, the host North Star Knights went 3-1 with wins over Rocky Boy, Dutton-Brady and Hays-Lodge Pole. The Knights’ lone loss came at the hands of Roy-Winifred in a wild two-setter. The Knights won the first set 26-24, but dropped the second 23-25, and the Outlaws were declared the winner via a tiebreaker. The Outlaws were first in the pool at 4-0, while Dutton-Brady went 2-2. Rocky Boy was 1-3 with a win over HLP, while the Thunderbirds went 0-4 on the day.

Meanwhile, in the Gildford Pool, the Big Sandy Pioneers were strong, going 4-0 with wins over the North Star JV, Sunburst, Heart Butte and Geraldine. The Tigers went 3-1 in the pool, while the Refiners were 2-2, the Knights were 1-3 and Heart Butte was 0-4.

Things shifted to bracket play Saturday with the championship bracket played at Rudyard. The Knights started things off with a win over Sunburst, which set up a meeting with the Pioneers. Big Sandy got the better of North Star by scores of 25-14 and 25-14, but the Knights rebounded to beat Geraldine 25-16, 19-25 and 16-14 for third place. Meanwhile, the Pioneers faced off against Roy-Winifred in what could be a matchup of two of the best Northern C teams around. And in that championship match, it was all Big Sandy, as the Pioneers beat the Outlaws 25-15 and 25-14.

Overall, Big Sandy was first, Roy-Winifred was second, North Star third, Geraldine fourth and Dutton-Brady was fifth in the championship bracket. In Gildford, Rocky Boy beat Heart Butte and HLP to finish seventh overall, while the T-Birds were eighth with a win over the North Star JV’s. The Knights were ninth after beating Heart Butte in the final match.

Chinook was a busy gym this weekend too as the Sugarbeeters played host to the annual Chinook Invite. Each year, the Chinook Invite hosts a powerful group of District 1B and 2B teams, as well as stalwarts from the Northern C, like the Beeters, Chester/J-I Hawks, Highwood Mountaineers and Simms Tigers.

Friday was pool play day, and the Beeters were 2-2 with wins over Conrad and Valier, and losses to Malta and Simms. The Hawks went 0-4 in pool play with losses to Glasgow, Shelby, Cut Bank and Highwood.

In Saturday’s bracket play, the Hawks lost to Conrad early, then were eliminated by Malta. Chinook was beaten early by Cut Bank and was also eliminated by the M-Ettes. Glasgow wound up beating Simms for third, while Shelby beat 1B rival Cut Bank in the championship match.
