Blue Pony golf teams earn East Glacier team titles

The Havre High varsity golf teams had little time to rest before setting out for another 18 holes.

Thursday afternoon, the Blue Ponies were at the East Glacier Lodge Golf Course for an 18-hole tournament hosted by Browning, just two days after playing 36 holes at the Great Falls Invitational.

Thursday’s Browning tournament featured the Indians, as well as teams from Lewistown, Great Falls High (JV), CMR (JV), Polson (JV) and Libby.

And the Ponies were the best of the best in both the boys and girls meets.

The Havre High boys shot 354 to beat Lewistown and Libby by eight strokes. The CMR JV’s were fourth followed by Browning. Polson and GFH didn’t have enough players to qualify in the team race. The Pony girls were equally as good. Havre shot 377 to blow away the field, with Lewistown a distant second at 418. The GFH JV team was third.

Individually, the Pony boys were led by a first-place finish from sophomore Jerod Boles, who shot 82. Boles’ outstanding round was complimented by the fact he also shot 82 Tuesday at Eagle Falls in Great Falls. Overall, four of the Ponies’ five boys placed in the Top 10 Thursday. Jeff Miller was eighth with a 90 and freshman Kane Gabrielsen was ninth with a 91. Fellow freshman Dustin Haas also shot 91, but finished 10th due to a scorecard tiebreaker. Junior Wyatt Lindbloom rounded out the scoring for the Havre boys with a 96.

Senior Katie Beck led all five HHS girls breaking 100 Thursday at East Glacier. Beck finished in second place with a 90. It was Beck’s second top-two finish of the season. Randi Gabrielsen and Payton Howard, HHS’s two sophomores, finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Gabrielsen shot 95 and Howard shot 96. Boston Swensen also shot 96, but finished eighth via a tiebreaker, while Nikki Gabrielsen shot 99 to place ninth.

The HHS golf teams will return to East Glacier for the Browning Invitational next Friday.
