Playoff golf begins at Prairie Farms

For men’s league golfers at Prairie Farms Golf Course, and for high school golfers in Havre, this is certainly an exciting week.

The 2013 Havre High golf season will begin Thursday afternoon, as the Blue Ponies hold their first practice of the season, and their first under new head coach Brett Gilman. HHS has just a few days to prepare for its Aug. 20 tournament at Prairie Farms.

Meanwhile, the men’s league golf season at Prairie Farms has reached the playoffs. Starting tonight, 16 teams will do battle, with the field narrowed down to eight Wednesday night. The semifinals will be played next Tuesday, and the 18-hole championship match will be held next Wednesday.

The final Tuesday night of the regular season, Wagner Plumbing scored 22 points to take home high-team. The team is composed of Dan Wagner, Dan Kiederowski, Russ Earl and Greg Baltrusch. Wagner and Mike “Cakes” Purkett tied for low gross with rounds of 39, while Steve Bebee was low net with a 31.

Wagner Plumbing also captured first place in the Tuesday night, second-half standings, to go along with winning the first half earlier this season. Joining Wagner in the playoffs from the first half was Korb Construction, Patrick Construction and Hole 19. From the second half of the Tuesday night season, Stockman Bank, Bing ‘N’ Bob’s, Tilleman Motors and Northern Edge were the top four in.

Last Wednesday night saw Master Sports score 21.5 points to earn high-team honors. Kyle Sheppard, Doug Sheppard, Jim Kirkpatrick and Wayne Bolken made up the squad. Kyle Sheppard was also low gross with a stellar 3-under-par 33, while Kirkpatrick was low net with a 29.5.

Valley Furniture finished on top of the second half of the Wednesday night standings. Joining Valley form the second half is Hi-Line Audio Video, Taco John’s and Mariani Insurance. D.A. Davidson, Master Sports, Bear Paw Credit Union and Michelob Lights were the top four teams from the first half of the season.

Last Thursday night in ladies league at Prairie Farms, Patrick Construction was the high team. The squad was composed of Katie Heath, Kathy Peterson, Carolyn Patrick and Dora Wirtzberger. Connie Peterson was low gross with a solid 41, while she shared low net with Paula Sheppard at 31.5. The women’s league playoffs also begin this Thursday night at Prairie Farms.

The Havre Wrestling Club will hold its annual scramble at Prairie Farms Saturday. The tournament, which is an 18-hole, 4-person scramble, will start at 10 a.m. and costs $75 per player. The fee includes greens fees, mulligans and lunch. To sign up, call the Pro Shop at Prairie Farms at 265-4790.

Finally, congrats to all those local players who got out and played in MSGA State Amateur events last week. Havre’s Teresa Brown shot a 279 at the Women’s State AM last week at Meadowlark Country Club in Great Falls. And at the Senior State AM at Missoula CC, Havre’s Dave Greenwood shot 269, Bob Breum, 284 and Kerry Ward 277. Cal Loudermilk played two rounds before withdrawing, while Chester’s Pete Woods and Carmen Jansen shot 263 and 237, respectively.
