Local Golf Report: Rotary week a big hit yet again

From Tee to Green

The Rotary Club does a lot of great things for our community throughout the entire year, and when it comes to sports, this past week was a big one for the Rotary Club.

Last week, at Prairie Farms Golf Course, Rotary sponsored the annual Rotary Youth Golf Camp. The camp, for junior golfers ages 8-18, ran Tuesday through Thursday, and it was, and has been, spearheaded by longtime Havre golfing great Jim Kato. Last week saw 28 kids participate in the annual camp, which concluded with a mini-tournament for all of the golfers.

By starting the youth golf, Kato has done a great service to the youth golf movement in Havre, and it will likely help to make the Havre High golf program stronger and stronger as time goes on.

Sunday, the annual Rotary Blast was held at Prairie Farms. The 18-hole, modified stableford scoring tournament was held in extremely challenging conditions. Prairie Farms, and Beaver Creek Golf Course before it, always does a great job of setting the course up to be very challenging for the tournament, and Sunday was no exception. Difficult pin placements, some grown-out rough and mother nature’s addition of a stiff, 20 mph wind made for a great golf test Sunday afternoon.

Coming out on top was the team of Dave and Tammy Boles. The duo scored +21.5 to repeat as Rotary Blast champions. They also won the 2012 tournament. Other flight winners included A.J. Lamere and Shane Patasal, who finished +12, Brett and Joann Normandy, who finished +14 and Jacob Lorang and Craig Tilleman, who finished +10.

It was a great Sunday afternoon for a great tournament at Prairie Farms, as well as a great full week for golf in our community. And I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Kato, Doug Sheppard, Barry Zanto, Dave and Judy Greenwood, Brian Lilletvedt, Brett Gilman and his crew, the Prairie Farms staff, and everyone else who works so hard to make this week one of the best during the Havre golf season each and every year.

And the tournament fun will keep on going this week at Prairie Farms, as the annual Havre Public Schools Foundation Scramble will take place on Sunday.

League golf also picked back up last week, after taking the Fourth of July week off. In women’s action last Thursday, Northern Montana Hospital scored 21.5 points to earn high-team honors. The team is composed of Terri Earl, Carol Culp, Kim Klein and Patti Nault. Ali Ward was low gross with a 40 and Carolyn Patrick was low net with a 31.

In men's league at Prairie Farms last Tuesday, Hi-Way Bar and Korb Construction tied for high team with 22.5 points. Jim Kirkpatrick shot a 1-under par 35 to earn low gross, while Brandt Montelius and Shane Kemmer were low net with a 29. Last Wednesday saw Michelob Light score 23 points to take high-team honors. Jim Kato shot a 2-under 34 for low gross, and Eric Fee was low net with a 28.5.
