Continuing their tough schedule, the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team returned to the diamond for two more district games Tuesday afternoon.
Following a two-game sweep of Tri-County Monday, the North Stars took to the road to face Medicine Hat in another two-game series Tuesday. This time the North Stars were on the wrong end of the sweep, as the Knights won by scores of 25-21 and 15-7.
The Knights and North Stars combined for 35 hits and just five errors in the first game.
Havre had 17 of those hits, but couldn’t limit the Knights’ run production down the stretch. The North Stars held a healthy 18-9 lead after posting 14 runs in the fourth innings. But grabbing just three more runs in the final three innings, the Knights soon had an offensive explosion of their own. The Knights came from behind, scoring eight runs in the fifth and seven runs in the sixth, as Medicine Hat rallied late to earn the four run win.
Thurman Holdsclaw was 4-for-5 with four RBIs, while Chris Vukasin was also 4-for-5 with four RBIs of his own. Travis Roth had three hits and two RBIs, while Gavin Gunderson had three hits and five RBIs. Deionn Hammet had two hits and David Denny had one hit. Holdsclaw had two doubles and a home run to add to the offensive barrage.
And while the bats were productive, it took Havre putting four different pitchers on the mound in the losing effort. Denny pitched four innings, followed by Vukasin, Gunderson, and Hammet all taking the mound as well. Denny gave up 14 runs on 12 hits, including six walks and two strikeouts.
Things were a bit calmer in the nightcap, but the North Stars’ 10 hits weren’t enough to get the win.
Ryne Antley was on the mound, and pitched all six innings. Antley gave up four earned runs, as the defense also committed three errors. He also struck out five and struggled with accuracy, walking 16 Knights. And after the Knights took a 3-0 lead through three innings, the North Stars were never able to close the gap and run away with the lead.
Gunderson had another big day, this time around grabbing four hits and two more RBIs. Spencer Ross also had two hits and an RBI, while Holdsclaw, Denny, Dustin Odegard, and Vukasin all had one hit each.
The North Stars now have a short break in the action, but will hit the road running on Monday and Tuesday. Havre will travel to Canada to face Lethbridge and Fort MacLeod in two two-game series.
