Local Golf Report: One special day for the ladies

From Tee to Green

Most every local golf tournament these days is a fund raiser for local causes. And a round of golf is certainly a good way to donate to a charity.

But one of the most worthy of them all each summer in Havre is the annual Havre Women Fighting Breast Cancer Tournament. The 2013 edition was held Saturday at Prairie Farms Golf Course, and with 16 three-woman teams entered, the event raised over $15,000 which will go toward breast cancer research and awareness.

The tournament is always a scramble format, and it’s the only women-only tourney in Havre each summer. This year, the Patrick Construction team of Melissa Oberquell, Katie Heath and Barb Easlick won the nine-hole tournament. And a big congratulations to our own Havre Daily News team for taking a stellar second place. The HDN team was named Breast News Around and was composed of our publisher, Stacy Mantle, as well as Chandra Moomey and Amy Brown. Way to go ladies. Third place in the scramble went to Swing Second Base which was sponsored by Dairy Queen. The team was made up of Paula and Erin McLain, as well as Lorna Kirkpatrick.

In the best cart/costume contest, which is a unique addition to the tournament, the WFB Sister Outlaws team, sponsored by Wells Fargo took first place. That team was made up of Kathy Peterson, Cindy Knutson and Kristi Shettel. Second place in the contest went to the Busy Bees, sponsored by Tilleman Motors. The team was composed of Wendy Wertheimer, Casey Shettel and Nicki Branden. Third place was the Groovy Girls, sponsored by Independence Bank. The team was composed of Terri Lilletvedt, Maxine Munson and Delonna Malone. Mike Peterson also took first place in the Most Spirited Caddie Contest, while Darren Overlie was awarded second place.

Yes, once again it was a great day for a great cause at Prairie Farms, and I would like to extend my own thank-you and congrats to all of the women who take part in this event, and help fight this disease which touches so many people’s lives.

This being the Fourth of July week — and it’s hard to believe it’s already here — there will be no men’s league or women’s league at Prairie Farms, though with hot temperatures and clear skies, you can bet golf courses will be busy over the holiday. Golf leagues will resume next week.

Last Tuesday night at Prairie Farms, Bing ‘N’ Bobs earned high-team honors with 25.5 points. The team is composed of Bill Evans, Cal Wirtzberger, Jeremy Jensen and Jeff Jensen. Justin Newton fired a 37 to take low gross, while Baltrusch was low net. Last Wednesday night, Taco Johns earned high team. The team was made up of Dave Greenwood, Tom Reynolds, Jerry Kuhn and Norton Pease. Kyle Sheppard was low gross with an even-par 36, while Maynerd Limberhand was low net with a 29.5.
