Another Havre city league softball tournament is in the books, and yet again, it took an if-necessary game that went down to the wire.
Wednesday night at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Softball Complex in Havre, the Havre Girls Fastpitch Association A-League softball season came to an end. The two teams left standing were Master Sports and Lions, and after two games decided this year’s champion, it was Lions who came away on top. Lions defeated Master Sports Tuesday, but Master Sports reached the chipper via the loser out bracket. Master Sports took game one Wednesday evening, 11-3, but Lions rebounded with a narrow, 9-8 victory in game two, claiming the title in five innings.
Game one was tied 2-2 through three innings, but Master Sports erupted for a combined nine innings in the fifth and sixth innings to take the lopsided win. But things were much tighter in the if-necessary game, especially as Master Sports attempted a comeback win.
Lions held a 7-5 lead through two innings, and the score remained close, an 8-6 Lions lead through four. Lions didn’t score in the top of the fifth, and with the time limit setting in; Master Sports had one last shot. But Jacey McDonald came on in pitching relief for Lions and sealed the deal, as Lions won 9-8.
Sydne Huston, Paige Henderson, Liz Facio and China Bohn had a lot of crucial at bats for Lions, while McDonald pitched well. And for Master Sports, Rachel Majeres, Payton Howard and Scout Boucher played key roles at the plate, and on defense, while Majeres pitched well for Master Sports.
