Still three wide-open races, four with unopposed candidates
It was relatively quiet in the Hill County Clerk and Recorder’s office this morning, despite the looming deadline in a city election with no candidates in three races — including for mayor — and four more races with unopposed candidates.
The deadline is 5 this afternoon to file as a candidate.
No candidates had filed as of this morning in the races for mayor — including incumbent Democrat Tim Solomon — or in the race for the Ward 1 seat now held by Democrat Gerry Veis or the two-year term for the seat in Ward 3 now held by Democrat Jay Pyette, who was appointed to fill out the year when Republican Rick Dow resigned to move to Minnesota.
The election will select someone to fill the two years remaining in that seat.
As of this morning, rather than running for the two-year position, Pyette was one of the unopposed candidates in another race for City Council.
He filed as a Democrat in the race for the four-year seat now held by Republican Bob Kaftan.
Incumbent Democrat Janet Trethewey was unopposed in the race for her four-year seat in Ward 2, and Republican John R. “Bob” Waldron was unopposed in the race for the seat in Ward 4 now held by Allen “Woody” Woodwick.
Woodwick could not run for the Ward 4 position due to redistricting. He now is a resident of Ward 3.
In the nonpartisan race for the seat held by City Judge Margaret Hencz, who announced she would not run for re-election, Hill County Justice Court clerk and judge pro tempore Virginia Seigel was running unopposed as of this morning.
Speculation is rampant that a rush of candidates will file this afternoon shortly before deadline.
