One of the biggest professional rodeos of the summer took place Friday and Saturday at the Blaine County Fairgrounds in Chinook. And it was as tough and as popular as ever.
The 15th annual Bear Paw Roundup PRCA Rodeo was held over the weekend, where the crowds were big, the weather was good and the stock was rank and rough.
In the final standings after two performances and Saturday morning’s slack, several big names on the PRCA circuit picked up good paychecks.
Delon Parker earned the all-around title in Chinook, while Sylvan LaCross scored 75 points to win the bareback competition. Locals Calvin Ophus and current Montana State University-Northern cowboy Charlie Mack also earned money in the bareback riding.
Jordan Holland broke the five-second barrier to win the steer wrestling title in Chinook, while Travis Winters and Trevor Sunvison captured the team roping championship. Tyrell Smith scored 83 points to win the saddle bronc competition, while Jake Newton was first in tie-down roping. Shelly Anzick had the top time in the barrels, while J.D. Harrell scored 71 points and had the only qualified bull ride of the entire weekend.
The next big rodeo on the Hi-Line will be the NRA sanctioned Great Northern Stampede July 19-20 in Havre.
