News you can use
Regular season tournaments always have something interesting or unique in store for teams, and ending the weekend with one win, two losses, and a tie, the same can be said for Havre and the Deer Lodge Tournament.
The American Legion North Stars spent Friday through Sunday in Deer Lodge. The North Stars got four more games under their belt, as well as added one more win to their record. The North Stars defeated the Butte Muckers 8-0 Friday. Unfortunately, the North Stars went winless the remainder of the weekend, losing 20-0 to the Missoula Frontiers and Deer Lodge Wranglers 9-1 Saturday. Sunday, the North Stars didn’t win or lose, as the matchup between the North Stars and Missoula Pioneers ended in a 7-7 tie due to the time limit.
In the win over the Muckers, starting pitcher Gavin Gunderson allowed just four hits.
But on the flipside, the North Stars were able to string together nine hits of their own. Tyrell Pierce had a great outing, going 3-for-3 at the plate. But not to be outdone, Thurman Holdsclaw also continued to help lead the way, going 2-for-3. Travis Roth, David Denny, Spencer Ross and Gunderson each had one hit as well, while Roth, Ross and Gunderson each had one RBI.
Ross struggled on the mound in game two of the weekend, and 13 hits helped result in 20 runs for the Frontiers, and a loss for the North Stars. And after the bats were hot for Havre Friday, they cooled down Saturday, as Roth, Ross and Gunderson had one hit each in the loss.
The offense continued to struggle in the eight-run loss to the Wranglers as well. This time Pierce suffered the loss on the mound, while Holdsclaw, Roth and Gunderson had one hit each. The North Stars had a combined six hits in the two losses Saturday.
Havre also may never know if they could have earned a split on the weekend, as a time limit ended their weekend with a 7-7 tie with the Pioneers.
Instead of finishing 2-2, the North Stars finished 1-2-1, with the pitching staff not given a win or a loss. Again, the North Stars got just three hits, but more of the lineup did get in on the action. Denny, Ross and Dustin Odegard earned one hit each, while Holdsclaw, Roth, Denny and Odegard all had one RBI each. Ross had two RBIs.
The weekend may have ended in a tie, but the North Stars will look to get back into the win column Thursday. Havre will host two games against the Great Falls Electrics at Legion Field in Havre, with the first game starting at 5 p.m. The North Stars will also play an exhibition game against the Havre Babe Ruth All-Stars Wednesday night.
