Havre Public Schools is partnering with community groups with one goal: Catch kids doing something right.
“Pony Way to go Bucks,” will be handed out to young people if members of the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce see them doing something helpful to others.
Superintendent Andy Carlson is hoping other community groups, perhaps service clubs, law enforcement agencies and clergy will join in the effort.
The point of the exercise, he said, is to encourage young people to do the little things that help people day in and day out.
All people are required to do is hand the student the card and tell them what they did to deserve it.
Things like holding the door open for someone or helping someone who has fallen will make a student eligible, he said.
“Maybe an employer who has a student employee who always shows up on time and does a good job would want to give out a card,” Carlson said.
People who get a card can turn it into the office at their school or at the Robins School Administration building during summer.
At the end of the month, a drawing will be held, and the winner will get a gift certificate from the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce, which can be used at most local businesses.
Students from Hi-Line schools who are caught doing something good will also be eligible, he said. Students can take their cards to the administration building on 5th Avenue.
Cards are already being handed out.
Chamber Executive Director Debbie Vandeberg said she gave out the first card, right after she was at a meeting when the plan was explained.
Carlson said he understands that other cards have been given to students.
“This is a way of telling young people you are valued, and if you do something good, you will be recognized,” Carlson said.
