Severe storm, flash flood watch in effect; tornadoes possible

Residents urged to monitor updates, local reports and forecasts

National Weather Service issued a watch today to a region still reeling from flooding, warning of possible flash floods and severe thunderstorms.

The watch is set for noon today through this evening from Glacier through Blaine counties, including Chouteau, Hill and Liberty counties, and extending to the south through northern Lewis and Clark and Cascade counties through Judith Gap and Fergus counties.

The Weather Channel is forecasting possible tornadoes from Hingham through Harlem and farther east, and south through Big Sandy and Loma.

The watch states that storms are expected to develop along the Rocky Mountain Front this afternoon and spread east across the area, bringing large hailstones; high, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall.

The soil still saturated with moisture from storms from mid-May through early June could lead to rapid runoff and flash flooding, the watch says.

The flood watch warns that low-lying areas, creeks, streams and rivers are most susceptible to flash flooding, and people living in or near these areas should have a plan of action in place and be ready to move immediately should heavy rainfall develop.

Urban areas also are prone to flooding when storm sewer systems cannot drain heavy rainfall quickly enough, the watch adds.

The watch urges people to monitor reports and forecasts and to be prepared to take rapid action should flash flood warnings be issued.

Weather Service requests weather spotters to report any incidents of hail, strong wind gusts, heavy rainfall or flash flooding.
