The Chinook High School Sugarbeeters put up a serious fight in a national contest, but could not pull off the championship competition.
The Chinook High School mascot took a distant fourth in USA Today High School Sports Best Mascot competition with 1,766,995 votes
Chinook won the first two rounds of USA Today's online competition, winning the state competition then the regional battle against mascots from seven other states.
But, despite the outpouring of support in the national competition that ran from last Thursday through Wednesday, the Sugarbeeters couldn't catch the Orphans of Centralia, Ill.
The Orphans won the national contest with 25,392,806 votes, while the Carbon County High School Dinos of Price, Utah, took second with 13,089,518 votes.
The Wyverns of Kingswood Oxford High School in West Hartford, Conn., trailed the Chinook mascot for much of the competition, but managed a surge in the last day to pass the Sugarbeeters and take third with 1,783,538 votes.
The Turkeys of St. Mary's Episcopal School in Memphis, Tenn., took fifth with 216,968 votes, and the Key High School Obezags of Annapolis, Md., took sixth with 203,418 votes.
