News you can use
Laurel — All week the Havre Daily News has been highlighting volunteers for community groups of all sorts. From hospitals to care centers to churches to schools to groups that help the poor, volunteers keep the wheels running. As Volunteer Week draws to a close, we thank all the people who donate their time to help others.
Dart — The United States Postal Service spent $40 million in a program with now disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong, trying to drum up business for post offices. Now they are suing to get their money back. The postal service would have been better off using the money to keep Hi-Line post offices — and offices in many rural communities across the United States — open. Several are now planned for closure, though fortunately closure has been delayed.
Laurel — The Montana Legislature has approved, and Gov. Steve Bullock is set to sign, a funding plan that would help Montana State University get the new building it has been fighting for for years. We wish they would have allocated more money. Northern will have to raise about $3 million itself, but where there's a will, there's a way.
Laurel — Scott Filius and Pat Tilleman were named teacher of the year and classified employee of the year, respectively, for Havre Public Schools Thursday night. Congratulations to them and to all those people — inside and outside the classroom — who make Havre schools so tremendous for our community's young people.
Laurel — Salvation Army is the stop of last resort for many people. When they are on the verge of eviction, when they can't pay gas bills, when they have no place to sleep for the night, they stop at the Salvation Army. Unfortunately, a lot more people are in these circumstances these days. Saturday night people have a chance to help the Salvation Army while enjoying some fine Hi-Line entertainment. Several local groups will perform at the annual fundraiser at 7 p.m. at Havre High School. For $5 you can have a fun time and help the Salvation Army.
