Laurel — Memorial Day services will be held in downtown Havre and elsewhere on the Hi-Line Monday. The Havre service, 11 a.m. at Hill County Courthouse, will be a simple, but moving, ceremony in which all veterans groups will take part. It is well worth attending. Spending a few minutes going to the event will be a great way for people to pay tribute to those who have died for our country.
Laurel — The people who put on the ceremony do a lot of work behind the scenes. Their work pays off for those who attend the service. When you see the organizers, thank them for the time they put into it.
Dart — The Montana Supreme Court made a big mistake this week. It seems there have been enough legitimate questions raised to warrant a new trial in the case of Barry Beach, who is a serving a life sentence for a 1979 murder. Investigative journalists have raised many legitimate questions about the prosecution's case. A lower court overturned the conviction, freed Bonds and ordered a new trial. But the Supreme Court by a 4-3 vote reversed that decision and Beach is back in jail. His lawyers are promising more appeals.
Laurel — Graduation ceremonies are being held throughout the Hi-Line. Every student who has completed high school coursework deserves praise. There are a lot of temptations to keep students away from their studies, and a lot to keep them for graduating. But more Montanas are graduating from high school because students are sticking to their work and teachers and administrators are working hard to keep them in school. Congrats to the grads and thanks to the school officials.
