Veterans will honor war dead on Monday

Local veterans will hold at a Memorial Day program Monday at 11 a.m at the Hill County Courthouse.

The lineup includes a flag-raising ceremony to be performed by local Boy Scouts of America. Weather permitting, flags will be marched down the sidewalks outside the courthouse, and the national anthem will be played.

A reading of the names of deceased veterans and of deceased members of the auxiliaries will follow this portion of the ceremony.

There will then be a wreath-laying ceremony performed by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks, American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary. An honor guard will give a 21-gun salute and taps will be played.

The rest of the program will be completed at the Elks Lodge, where another flag presentation will take place, and later, a free-will donation chili feed will be served by American Legion Auxiliary members.

Saturday, American Legion and auxiliary members will be selling poppies at Kmart, Gary & Leo's Fresh Foods and Sweet Temptations in the Atrium. Donations aid disabled and hospitalized veterans in the community. Additional locations to buy poppies may develop, so keep an eye out for Legion members.
