The Gallatin Valley Track Meet proved to be one of the tougher meets on the Havre High schedule this season.
So far this season, the Central A Blue Ponies have shown they have the athletes and ability to stick near the front of the pack. But competing in Belgrade on Saturday, both the boys and the girls teams struggled to score points against a very talented prep field of competitors.
The Pony boys finished the meet in sixth place with 29 points. Dillon finished in a distant first with 107, and conference rival Belgrade tied for second with Manhattan, both scoring 83 team points. Billings Central was third with 50. The Ponies did finish ahead of conference rival Lewistown, who was ninth with 16.5 points, but finished behind Livingston, who finished in fourth with 46 points.
In girls action, it was Belgrade who finished in first place with 103 points, while Sidney was second with 71, and Billings Central was third with 62. Lewistown finished ahead of the Ponies in fifth place with 32, while Livingston also finished ahead of the Ponies in sixth place with 30.
"It is a really tough meet," Havre High head coach Trevor VanCampen said. "We had some schools like Sidney show up who isn't normally at this meet, and Dillon is tough and so is Belgrade. They had the most schools that they have had in quite a while, and we got see a lot of good competition. There were just a ton of kids there with a lot of good times and marks, a lot of kids placed for state meets this weekend."
Seven individuals placed for the Blue Ponies.
For the boys, Thurman Holdsclaw and Zach Plum both placed in two events each, while Katie Christianson was able to accomplish the same task for the girls' squad.
Holdsclaw took the No. 2 spot in the pole vault, clearing 12-6, while also jumping 39-0 for a sixth-place finish in the triple jump. Plum found similar results, finishing the pole vault in fourth place with a cleared height of 11-0, and finishing the long jump in fourth place with a leap of 19-2.
Christianson placed in the distance events, earning a second-place finish in the 3,200-meter run and a fourth-place finish in the 1,600-meter. Christianson ran a 12:45.88 in the 3,200 and a 5:46.32 in the 1,600.
The Ponies also got two more third-place finishes in the pole vault. Thomas Gruber cleared 11-6 for the boys, while Lacey Waid cleared 9-6 for the girls.
Marc Klimas also ran the 3,200 in 10:39.92 for the HHS boys, and finished in fourth place. And Martha Stocker pitched in for the girls with a toss of 29-6 in the shot put, good enough for a fifth place finish. The boys' 400 relay team was the only relay to place over the weekend, finishing in 47.53 and in fifth place.
Rachel David competed in the junior varsity meet, but still garnered attention by VanCampen. David won the junior varsity 400, as well as placed in two other events. Peyton Filius would have also gave the HHS girls an extra boost in the team standings, but was not at the meet.
But more importantly than the overall team finishes, the Ponies did get what they wanted out of this weekend, they got to see the top teams in the conference, and they got to see how the Ponies stack up.
"We got to see Belgrade, Livingston, and Lewistown," VanCampen said. "We know we have our work cut out for us. The Belgrade and Lewistown girls are very deep this year, and so are the Belgrade boys. We were able to see where we need to be come divisional time, and I think all of our kids really had a good meet considering the conditions.
"And the busy schedule we have for April is beneficial," VanCampen added. "It is getting us on the track nearly twice a week, and each week we are still seeing personal records. We are headed in the right direction and we just have to maintain what we are doing as we continue to gear up for the post season."
Moving forward, the Ponies have another busy week. On Tuesday the Ponies will compete in Malta, and on Saturday, the Ponies will remain on the road to compete in Whitefish.
