Chinook tennis team finishes strong

The Chinook girls tennis team has had quite the run the last few years. And the Sugarbeeters made plenty of noise at this weekend's Class B-C state tennis tournament.

The Beeters scored 17 points and got a fifth-place finish from singles player Kiana Burkhartsmeyer at the B-C state girls meet which ran Thursday-Saturday in Missoula. Chinook finished in fifth place overall. Fairfield scored 40 points to win the state title, while Cut Bank was second and Superior-Alberton was third. Conrad finished one point ahead of the Beeters with 18 points. Chester/J-I scored two points in the tournament.

The Chinook girls tennis team finished fifth at the Class B-C state tournament in Missoula last weekend, including a fifth-place finish in singles from Kiana Burkhartsmeyer.

Burkhartsmeyer won her first two matches to reach the state quarterfinals before she fell to eventual state champion Emma Woolridge of Superior-Alberton. She then battled back to win twice before losing to Cut Bank's Paige Larson. That put Burkhartsmeyer in the fifth-place match, where she beat Fairfield's Maggie Leigland for the second time in the tournament.

The Chinook doubles team of Alana Smith and Mariah Swank won their first two matches before falling in the state quarterfinals. The duo then lost out to a strong team from Baker but they did score a solid four points. Young Brooke Nicholson added to the Beeters' total by winning a first-round match and two times in the loser-out bracket before being eliminated.

Chester/J-I's two points came from Susanne Stewart in the loser-out draw. After falling in the first round, Stewart battled two win two points for the Hawks.

On the boys side, defending champion Conrad was edged by Missoula Loyola 46-41. The Cowboys swept the singles and doubles state titles however. Cut Bank was third.
