Momentum continues to grow for the Havre High wrestling team. And dominating an all Class A field over the weekend, that could be an early preview for the rapidly approaching state tournament.
The Central A Blue Ponies spent the weekend in Belgrade for the Class A Duals.
And the Ponies didn't just perform well, they dominated most of the opposition and earned the team title. In the championship

the Ponies defeated conference rival Belgrade 42-29. On the road to the championship dual, the Ponies defeated Hardin 61-15, Livingston 83-6, Billings Central 56-21, Corvallis 55-21, Dillon 64-18, and Miles City 76-0. The Ponies also defeated Glendive 45-33 in the semifinals.
The Championship win had an extra sweet feeling, coming over the rival Panthers. And just last week in Missoula, the Panthers finished ahead of the Ponies, something that didn't sit well with the competitive Ponies.
"The kids wrestled well and I was pleased," Havre High head coach Scott Filius said. "We made a ton of mistakes, but we improved from our mistakes and we got better as the tournament went on.
"We didn't have everybody last week," FIlius added. "But you show up and you still go with what you've got. We should have been able to dual better last week, but when we got our whole lineup we are a different animal."
Facing the Panthers, the Ponies lost seven matches, but wrestled very well overall. HHS competed hard from start to finish, and the matches they did lose, were not a big deal as Filius had some kids wrestling up a weight.
Keegan Kennelly (98), Logan Pleninger (105), and Grayson Brenna (112) all won by forfeit. But Thomas Gruber (130), Jordan Schroeder (152), and Grant Pattison (189) all won with pins. Gruber pinned Lyle Degen in 1:19, Schroeder pinned Michael Barday in 56 seconds, and Pattison pinned Jaden Bryant in just 47 seconds. Kody Pribyl (140) and Tyler Adams (HWT) also won by way of decision for the Ponies.
Dylan Stewart (119), Gilbert Bara (135), Gunnar Aageson (145), JT Belcourt, and Dustin Odegard (215) all lost in the chipper, but still performed well. Stewart lost a 7-0 decision, but was wrestling at 119 instead of 112 where he weighed in.
But that was not a concern for Filius. The grapplers still wrestled well in each dual, and even impressed the coaching staff in losing situations.
"We just wrestled well," Filius said. "We were dominating where we needed to be, and competed where we weren't. Some of our best matches were losses. Freshman Kody Pribyl wrestled a kid that was second at state, and we were well into the third period as they were holding on for a win, and we are pushing them. I feel good about those matches."
Pribyl (140) faced Glendive's Layne Lantis in the semifinals, a second-place finisher at the state tournament last season as a junior. Lantis defeated Pribyl in a 5-2 decision, but Pribyl put up a great fight and even held a lead in the third period.
The weekend was a very productive one for the Ponies, and with the Central A divisional, and the state tournament just around the corner, it should be a big boost for many of the HHS grapplers. Kennelly, Brenna, Gruber, Pattison, Pleninger and Adams all went undefeated this weekend, and as reoccurring leaders for the program, the Ponies continue to improve and impress as the season rolls on.
"The good thing is that we did all this against Class A opponents," Filius said. "And we know we are going to run into a lot of these guys at state. And yeah I did (learn more about this team this weekend), we are starting to mature and really coming together. It is starting to be a lot of fun and the kids are starting to take ownership of their role, and doing a nice job."
On Wednesday, HHS hosts CMR and Friday the Ponies will host Conrad. A triangular between Havre, Conrad and Forsyth was scheduled for Friday, but Forsyth cancelled.
