Two games is all the Chester/J-I Hawks needed in order to claim the 2013 District 10C crown. And though the Hawks were pushed in the semifinals, they had little trouble advancing to this week's Northern C Divisional in Great Falls.
Saturday night in Conrad, the Hawks blasted the Valier Panthers 52-28 in the 10C girls championship game. The win gave the Hawks a repeat as district champions, and sets them up to face rival North Star at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the first round of the Northern C.
Against the Panthers, C/J-I's defense was dominating. The Hawks held Valier to just eight points in the first half, and led 30-8 at intermission. From there, C/J-I cruised to the title. Kate Graff paced C/J-I in the win with 15 points, while Denerey Haaland scored 13.
The Hawks reached the championship game by beating Dutton-Brady 42-30 in the semifinals on Friday night. C/J-I led 24-11 at halftime, and while the Diamondbacks played better in the second half, C/J-I was just too much. Haley Harmon scored a game-high 14 points for the Hawks, while Birttnee Theel added nine and Graff scored eight.
C/J-I (18-2) joins the Knights and Chinook as local teams who will gather at the Northern C girls tournament Wednesday-Friday at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls.
Things didn't go as well for Rocky Boy at the District 1B or Harlem at the 2B, as neither team made it out of the tournament.
In Shelby, the Morning Stars lost their first-round game to rival Cut Bank 60-53 on Thursday. The game was close throughout, but the Wolves went on a 21-15 run in the fourth quarter to put Rocky Boy away. In the loss, Leigha Onco scored 13 points and Chanel Standing Rock added 10.
After second-seeded Choteau was upset in the semifinals, the Morning Stars had to play the Bulldogs Saturday morning for the right to go to the Northern B tourney. But Choteau was too strong, and the bulldogs ended Rocky Boy's season with a 60-44 win. In the final loss, Brandi Buffalo scored 15 points for the Morning Stars. Fairfield beat Conrad in the championship game, while Choteau and Cut Bank also advanced to the Northern B in Glasgow.
Harlem's chances of getting to the Northern B were also dashed due to an upset in the 2B tournament in Glasgow. Malta was shocked by Plentywood in the semifinals, so Harlem had to face the powerful M-Ettes in Saturday morning's loser-out game. And it was all Malta as the M-Ettes ended the Wildcats' season by a score of 74-19.
Harlem opened 2B play on Thursday with a 48-33 loss to Wolf Point. Kasey Ramone paced the Wildcats with five points. Plentywood beat Wolf Point in the championship game, and will be joined by Malta and Glasgow at the Northern B Divisional.
