Breaking Sports: Skylights shut down Montana Tech

Already riding a bitter two-ganme losing streak, things looked bleak 20 minutes into the MSU-Northern Skylights' home game with Montana Tech Friday night at the Armory Gymnasium. But Northern turned a 22-15 halftime deficit into a commanding 54-41 win over the Orediggers, in a second half that very well could turn the Skylights around.

MSU-N shot just 20 percent from the floor and made zero 3-pointers in the first half of Friday night's game, but freshman Kacie McKeon teamed with fellow reserve Maurisha McKissic, as well as senior Jordan Bruursema to spark the Skylights on an 18-2 run in the second stanza, which took over the game. McKeon buried two critical 3-pointers, while Bruursema tallied 10 of her 13 points in the final 20 minutes, while the MSU-N defense held Tech to just 19 second-half points and 28 percent shooting for the contest. The Orediggers came in averaging over 70 points per contest.

Bruursema finished with a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double for MSU-N, while Nikki Tresch scored 10. McKeon scored all eight of her points in a six-minute span in the second half, and McKissic added eight of her own. She also grabbed eight rebounds as Northern hammered Tech on the boards 44-33, despite giving up a double-double to star forward Kelsey DeWit.

The win improved the Skylights to 3-3 in the Frontier Conference and 11-7 overall. MSU-N will go for two in a row Saturday night when the Lewis-Clark State Warriors come to Havre.
