Wildcats earn a solid Top 10 finish

BILLINGS — The Hi-Line is littered with some of the state's top wrestlers, and after another state wrestling tournament was completed over the weekend, a handful of local wrestlers made that statement true yet again.

Friday and Saturday in Billings, Harlem, Chinook, Big Sandy and Chester/J-I competed at the Class B-C state wrestling tournament at the Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark. The Class B Harlem Wildcats finished in ninth place overall with 84 points. The Chinook Sugarbeeters earned a No. 2 Class C finish with 49.5 points, which was 12th overall, while both the Class C Big Sandy Pioneers and Class C C/J-I Hawk finished No. 28 overall with 25 points each.

Harlem's Teague Jones, right, battles Forsyth's Matthew Weber during the Class B-C 125-pound state championship match Saturday night at the Rimrock Auto Arena in Billings. Jones was one of three Wildcats to finish second individually.

With their second-place finish over the weekend, the Beeters had an impressive season yet again.

In the seven years the Class C has been able to claim their own team titles, the Beeters have finished in the top two each season. The Beeters had won five straight Class C trophies prior to Saturday's second-place finish to Fort Benton, and though Chinook didn't finish on top, the program is still one of the best in the B-C ranks.

"Absolutely we are happy," Chinook head coach Perry Miller said. "The kids wrestled hard and never quit on us. We brought seven freshmen and sophomores with us this weekend, and we have no complaints. They all scored points and we will be back."

Chinook's Donovan Moon, right, battles for position during the Class B-C 98-pound semifinals Saturday morning in Billings. Moon wound up finishing in fifth place.

Rob Klingaman (189) and Donovan Moon (98) had the best individual results, as they both placed fifth. Moon went 3-2 on the weekend and earned a pin in 2:16 over Circle's Cameron Flandland in the fifth-place match. Moon did well, winning twice on Friday to reach the semifinals before suffering his first loss. Klingaman, who finished second last season, went 4-2 on the weekend and also earned a pin in the fifth-place match. Klingaman pinned Austin Burshia of Poplar in 4:43. Klingaman, who was injured for much of the season, was beaten by eventual state champion Colby Roberts of Ronan in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Wyatt Brandal (130) also went 2-2 on the weekend, while Jake Norby (112) went 2-2, Geoff Qualls (135) and Jesse Dannels (160) went 1-2. Garrison Mitchell (98), Owen Powell (125), Ken Pruttis (145) and Kevin Young (189) all went 0-2.

Harlem's Seth Adams, left, tries to escape Choteau's Owen DeBruckyer during their 215-pound B-C championship match Saturday night in Billings.

"The young kids all wrestled very hard for us," Miller said. "But Rob (Klingaman) came through for us. I realize it was a fifth-place finish and it wasn't what he wanted, but we need senior leadership in order to bring those young kids along. They all wrestled hard, but Rob (Klingaman) and those seniors did what they needed to do to get us that second-place finish."

Harlem knew it had a talented team this season, and a top-three finish wasn't out of the question. But while the Wildcats housed a tough lineup, things just didn't fall into place this weekend.

Chester/J-I's Shalon Norick holds Malta's Gerome Lamb down during the B-C heavyweight consolation final Saturday at the Metra.

Harlem did get three kids wrestling on finals night, but all three grapplers lost tough matches in the championship round.

Shay Snider (112) was defeated 6-2 in the championship, while Teague Jones (125) lost 10-0 in the chipper. Seth Adams (215) also had a shot at a title, but fell to Owen DeBruycker of Choteau in 2:29. Snider, Jones, and Adams all went 3-1 in the two days.

Big Sandy's Dusty Gasvoda, right, battles at 157 pounds Friday in Billings.

T'Jay Allen (119) and Brenden Johnson (135) also went 2-2, while Gus Taylor (119) and Cody Blackcrow went 1-2. Denton Cornell (160) went 0-2 on the weekend.

"We had a good tournament overall," Harlem head coach Lyle Faulkinberry said. "The kids wrestled well. I mean, I can't complain because the kids did wrestle as well as they could, but it is just tough losing three championship matches."

Big Sandy and C/J-I each got one top finisher, while also earning a handful of other wins.

Lane Martin (171) was the Pioneers' top performer, finishing in fourth place and a 3-2 two-day record. Once in the third-place match, Martin suffered his second loss. Sheldon Ridenhower of Baker beat Martin 7-3. Jacob Schuster (140), Dusty Gasvoda (152), and Adrian Gasvoda (160) all went 1-2 in their matches.

Chinook's Rob Kilingaman, right, looks to get away from Ronan's Colby Roberts during their 189-poind quarterfinal bout Friday in Billings. Klingaman finished fifth.

For the Hawks, it was heavyweight Shalon Norick who finished in third place. Norick was 4-1 on the weekend and earned a pin over Malta/Saco/Whitewater's Gerome Lamb in 2:40 to earn the third place finish. Erik Kelly (152) went 1-2, while Ryan Temple (130) and Wyatt Wickum (189) both went 0-2 for the Hawks.

Both Martin and Norick were semifinalists, each going 2-0 on Friday.

The B-C tournament came down to an exciting finish with Forsyth rallying to edge Choteau 202-201. The Dogies claimed their third straight state title. Colstrip was a distant third.
