Hi-Line Girls Roundup: Rocky Boy edges Big Sandy

The holiday break went by fast. And before fans knew it, high school girls basketball team's were back at it. This weekend saw the resumption of the high school season, and also the start of the drive towards postseason play.

The action was fast and furious right from the start this weekend with the renewal of an old rivalry Thursday night in Rocky Boy. The Rocky Boy Morning Stars and Big Sandy Pioneers battled for many years in the District 9C, and were two of the most successful team's of the last decade on the Hi-Line. And on Thursday night, it was if nothing had changed as the Class B Morning Stars beat the 9C Pioneers 65-55 in an overtime classic.

Big Sandy trailed 23-17 at halftime, but roared back to take a one-point lead heading into the final quarter. From there it was a seesaw affair in which the rivals needed an extra five minutes to decide the winner. In overtime, Rocky Boy caught fire, out-scoring the Pioneers 16-6 to win going away.

Leigha Onco poured in 19 points from Rocky Boy, while Catlyn Gamble added 14 and Brandi Buffalo chipped in with 11. Big Sandy got 12 points apiece from Molly Herron and Brooke Leader in the non-conference loss.

Things didn't get any easier for the Pioneers as they returned to 9C play Friday night. On the road again, this time to face Chinook, the Pioneers came up short, falling to the Sugarbeeters 53-44. Chinook had a 39-30 lead after three quarters, and the Pioneers could never quite get over the hump.

Makhayla Farmer scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Beeters, while Alana Smith scored 11. The Pioneers were paced by 14 points from Kaylie Gilman.

In another key 9C showdown Friday night, the Box Elder Bears took a step forward with a dominant 55-32 win over Hays-Lodge Pole in Hays. The Bears' defense clamped down on the Thunderbirds in the second half, allowing HLP just 10 points in the final 16 minutes.

Krista Chief Stick led three Bears in double figures with 15 points, while Lauren Four Colors added 14 and Rebecca Rossette scored 12. HLP got a combined 17 points from Shakayla Whitecow and Chassanna Doney in the loss.

Rocky Boy's Tristan Parisian, left, dribbles by Big Sandy's Leela Engle during a high school girls basketball game last Thursday night in Rocky Boy. The Morning Stars beat the Pioneers in overtime.

Friday night was also a good return to the court for the North Star Knights as they clobbered Sunburst 54-33. Tylynn Rettig notched a game-high 15 points, while Bettie Carlon tallied 12 and Delainey Spicher nailed two 3-pointers.

The return from holiday break also went well for the Chester/J-I Hawks. On Friday night, the Hawks blasted Power 63-26 behind 16 points from Denerey Haaland. Brittany Whitley also scored 13 as four Hawks reached double figures.

C/J-I remained on the road Saturday night and welcomed in a big rival of its own in the form of the North Star Knights. And looking to remain unbeaten, the Hawks ran past the Knights 53-35. After playing to a 5-5 tie in the first quarter, C/J-I busted the game wide open, going on a 26-12 run in the second to build a double-digit lead the Hawks would never relinquish.

Four Hawks again led the way with Haley Harmon scoring 13 points, while Haaland and Caitlin Vinson each scored 11 and Brittnee Theel chipped in with 10. North Star was paced by Bettie Carlon's 12 points.

Box Elder made it a perfect weekend on Saturday, as the Bears edged Heart Butte 48-44 at home. The Bears trailed the Warriors by four points in the fourth quarter, but came back via a 16-4 run. Lauren Four Colors led the way for Box Elder with 14 points.

In the only 9C game Saturday night, the Sugarbeeters made it look easy, beating the young Turner Tornadoes, 59-13. Makhayla Farmer and Emily Dennis led the Beeters with 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Ella Billmayer scored seven for Turner.

In Hays, things didn't go quite as smooth as HLP ran into 7C juggernaut Roy-Winifred. The Outlaws took care of the T-Birds, 52-25. On a night when the HLP offense struggled mightily, the T-Birds got seven points each from Shakayla Whitecow and Pauline Siers.

After winning a big game on Thursday, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars had a huge task in front of them Saturday night as they were in Fairfield to take on the unbeaten Eagles in a 1B showdown. Fairfield hasn't lost a game in nearly three years, and while Rocky Boy played well, the Eagles rolled to a 68-38 victory.

Fairfield led 42-17 at halftime and finished the Morning Stars off with a 21-6 run in the final frame. Brandi Buffalo had a solid game for Rocky Boy, scoring 16 points and pulling down nine rebounds.
