Velma L. Tyrrel

Velma L. Tyrrel, 82, passed away Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at Northern Montana Care Center due to natural causes.

Cremation has taken place. No services are planned. Arrangements have been entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home.

Velma was born Aug. 30, 1930, in Mobridge, S.D., to Lloyd and Hazel Hawkins. As a young girl the family moved to Harlowtown, Mont. She attended school there and graduated from Harlowtown High School.

In 1949 she married Everett Tyrrel. Velma worked for the Wheatland Grocery. The Tyrrels moved to Anaconda, Mont., where they resided from 1953 to 1959. While there, Velma worked as a clerk at a sporting goods store. In 1959 they moved to Missoula, Mont. She worked at a drugstore and Everett worked for Evans Plywood until 1961, when they moved to Lynnwood, Wash.

While there she worked as a clerk. They moved to Granite Falls, Wash., and operated a barber shop and grocery store for eight years. In 1972, they moved to Havre and operated the telephone answering service and radio communications. Velma closed the business and retired in 1997. Velma and Everett loved to travel. They cruised to Mexico, the Caribbean and the Hawaiian Islands. They flew to Alaska to fish.

Velma enjoyed crocheting. She made a large table cloth and won a blue ribbon at the Hill County Fair. She also enjoyed quilting, knitting, sewing cooking and baking. Velma was always happy, outgoing and someone you just enjoyed being around. She was a charter member of the Granite Falls Eagles Auxiliary.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Pamela June Tyrrel, in 1951; a brother, Lloyd Hawkins Jr. ; and her sister Gloria Welch.

Velma is survived by her husband, Everett Tyrrel of Havre; her son, Timothy James Tyrrel of Salt Lake City, Utah; two sisters, Lois Friede of Victor, Mont., and Virginia Little of Independence, Mo. ; her brother, James Hawkins of Anaconda; and numerous nieces and nephews, who have been truly wonderful.
