Warburton files for re-election

State Rep. Wendy Warburton, R-Havre, has filed for re-election, setting up what promises to be a hotly contested race.

Warburton for four years, has represented the 34th District, which includes northern Hill and Blaine counties, including Havre's east side.

Warburton said Thursday night that she decided to run for re-election because she feels she has the experience and knowledge of the issues.

She will be opposed by Democrat Karen Sloan, who has not filed, but announced Tuesday she would challenge Warburton.

Democrats say they will back Sloan, a retired nurse who has been active in numerous community activities. They predict she may upset Warburton. But Warburton has defeated Democratic candidates in the last two elections, despite a Democratic enrollment edge in the district.

Two years ago,

Warburton defeated Dana Sapp Seidel nearly 2 to 1, leading the GOP sweep in the traditionally Dem-ocratic district.
