News you can use

The picture in Wednesday's Havre Daily News of Thurman Holdsclaw and Katie Christianson enjoying their moment of glory at homecoming coronation prompted me to write this letter.
The smiles on the faces of these two make me think about so many of our students who are good kids, full of energy, enthusiasm and promise.
One often hears adults talk about "kids today" and wonder what has happened to our youth.
But from my perspective, the vast majority of our kids are good kids, doing what they believe is right, just trying to find their way, whether they are homecoming royalty or students sitting quietly watching the excitement around them. And it is up to us to do whatever we can to help them succeed, not because they have earned that right, but because they are our children ... and that's what caring adults do.
So I hope that you all saw the photograph of Katie and Thurman in Wednesday night's paper, and that their smiles made you smile a little too. And I hope that you see the promise that I do of a future of productive citizens that they will someday become. Yes, we can all point to kids in trouble, and parents in trouble too, but once in a while it's nice to focus on the positive.
