Norman Mosser Jr.

Norman Mosser Jr. was born on March 13, 1921, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Norman and Anna (Schroeder) Mosser. Norman died peacefully at his home on March 14, 2012.

Norman graduated from Chinook High School in 1939 and attended Northern Montana College in Havre. He joined the Montana National Guard on June 2, 1939. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Norman transferred to active duty with the U. S. Army Air Corps, where he became a C-47 pilot. He was stationed in London as part of the European Front campaign during World War II. He served on active duty from 1942 through Nov. 24, 1945, when he was discharged with the rank of first lieutenant. Norman was always proud of his service to his country and would discuss World War II with anyone who was interested.

Norman returned to Chinook after the war and worked various jobs until he started his banking career in 1949 at the Farmers National Bank. Shortly thereafter, he married his wife of 62 years, Marietta Chapman. They continued to make Chinook their home throughout Norman's life.

Norman continued his banking profession until he retired in April 1986 as the senior vice president of the Western Bank. He continued serving on the bank's Board of Directors until 1996 when his health started to decline. Many people throughout north-central Montana remember Norman as a likeable and trustworthy banker who helped many people with his sound financial advice and sensible recommendations.

Norman was very involved in the community of Chinook and was a staunch supporter of the Chinook school system and high school athletics. He spent well more than 30 years as an announcer and statistician at the local football and basketball games. Norman also served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Sweet Scholarship.

Through the years, Norman was an active member of the American Lutheran Church, the Chinook Golf and Country Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Eagles and Chinook Senior Citizens. He was also a Boy Scout troop leader, and, following retirement, continued to support all youth and community activities.

Norman was an avid golfer, bowler and card player. He loved to play any type of cards or games. For many years he was involved in the duplicate bridge clubs in Chinook and Havre.

Norman and Marietta (Chapman) had a very happy life together and were blessed with their two sons, David (Sue) Mosser of Billings, and Doug of Chinook. He is survived by his wife; his two sons, Donovan (Heather) Mosser and their children Isaac and Hadley of Billings, and Nichole (Jason) Walker and their daughter, Ayla, of Anchorage, Alaska. Norman is also survived by his sister, Elisabeth (Jack) O'Brien of Chinook; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Norman was always very close with his and Marietta's families. His entire extended families have special memories of Norman. He was a devoted family man who could brighten up any gathering with his good nature and sense of humor.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, Norman Mosser Sr. in 1949 and Anna Mosser in 1956; and his brother Doug, in 1955.
