HHS spikers perform in scrimmage

The Havre High volleyball team got their season under way with the annual Blue Pony, blue/white scrimmage.

Saturday turned out to be a solid event with a great turnout, with fans gaining an early glimpse at the 2012 Central A Blue Pony volleyball freshmen, junior varsity and varsity squads at the Havre High gymnasium.

junior varsity and froshmore squads facing off in two matches. And just as every expected, the junior varsity handed the young athletes two punishing losses. The junior varsity earned wins of 25-9 and 25-13.

But it was the varsity team that stole the show, and highlighted the afternoon's events.

The varsity team defeated the junior varsity with scores of 25-9 and 25-18, showing fans that hopefully have what it takes to be competitive in the Central A, as well as state.

In the first game, the varsity team went down 3-0 early, but bounced back and never let up. They stormed out to an 11-3 lead, and eventually got the win with a kill by new transfer Martha Stocker. Peyton Filius served well, and led the varsity to 16 straight points from behind the service line. Sarah Armstrong also had a kill in the game.

In the second game, the junior varsity put up more of a fight, but the varsity still earned the solid win, despite some signs of confusion and errors. The junior varsity took advantage and even held a 10-4 lead at one point. But coming back again, the varsity showed signs of why they could be favored in the conference this season. Brandy Lambourne turned in three aces in the game.

The Ponies will be back in action on Aug. 31, when they face Belgrade and Park in Belgrade. They will also face a field of talent at the Windy City Classic in Livingston on Sept. 1.
